YORK Norma Jean Heaps Stewart passed away peacefully at home on Friday, August 14, 2015. Norma was born on March 23, 1932, in Hershey. She was predeceased by her parents, Alma Hoover Heaps and Hugh Sweigart Heaps. Norma grew up in Hershey, graduating from Hershey High School in 1950. She studied nursing and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing in 1953. Norma worked as a medical instructor teaching nursing after graduation. She married Robert Joseph Stewart on February 15, 1954 at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Hershey. She then worked as a Registered Nurse in a doctor's office while living in California, and as a staff nurse in a Veteran Administration Hospital in Ann Arbor, Mich. Norma and Bob moved to the York area in 1958. While raising their family, Norma served the York community as a member of the Junior League and Young Women's Club, on the Children's Home Board, at the Community Health Center as a volunteer nurse and on the staff, and was the second woman to serve on the York YMCA Board. She was also very involved with First Presbyterian Church of York, including serving as an Elder and Deacon. The volunteer work closest to her heart was with the Visiting Nurse Association (VNA) of York. Norma served on the VNA Board for twenty years, and was Chairman of the Board of Directors from 1985 to 1987. She was instrumental in starting the VNA's Hospice of York and was also on the Wellspan Planning Committee for the VNA. During the last few weeks of her life, she was gently cared for by Hospice and Community Care, an offshoot of Hospice of York. The family would like to thank both Hospice and the caregivers of ComForCare Home Care for their compassionate care of her. Norma was a wonderful, giving friend to many and was always willing to take time for them. Her family was her pride and joy, and Norma was a devoted wife, loving mother and caring grandmother. She is survived by her husband of sixty-one years, Robert Joseph Stewart; her daughter and son-in-law, Eleanor Stewart Resser and Bill Resser of Mechanicsburg; her daughter, Judy Stewart and her husband Stephen Barrett of Santa Barbara, Calif.; her son, Andy Stewart and his wife Judy Cusma Stewart of York; her brother, Kenneth Heaps and sister-in-law, Judy Heaps of Red Lion; her brother, Barry Heaps and sister-in-law Eileen Heaps of Palmyra; her nine grandchildren, Megan Resser, Jenna Resser Mercatili, Chris Greenberg, Hannah Greenberg, Eleanor Greenberg, Sada Stewart, Tessa Stewart, Noah Stewart and Coleman Stewart; along with several nieces, nephews and cousins. Norma and Bob enjoyed traveling with family and friends, especially to Williamsburg, the Outer Banks and Jamaica. Norma enjoyed gardening, was an antique collector and was a talented knitter and needlepointer, making beautiful items for their home and to give as gifts. A private service for family is planned for the interment of her ashes at the Memorial Garden at First Presbyterian Church.
