Apr 29, 1959 - Jan 28, 2017

This obituary is administered by:
Michele Ann PorterAfter a determined and stubborn fight, Michele Porter, 58, Indianapolis, succumbed to several medical ailments. She was surrounded by family when she died Monday, Aug. 28.She was born on April 29, 1959, in Greensburg to Jon and Rosalyn (Feldman) Porter. Her father preceded her in death. During her entire life, she fought the effects of Cerebral Palsy. In spite of her physical challenges, Michele fought the idea that she was disabled, defended her dignity loudly and lived her life as independently as possible. She spoke to groups about her life. She was the first in the nation to secure ownership of her own home through a special program involving city and federal agencies. Family members tell tales of her racing down busy streets in her electric wheelchair to their consternation. She loved horses and the color purple.Michele created works of art she sold in hospital gift shops to embrace her survival twice from breast cancer. She enjoyed a good game of backgammon, which she played with an aggressive style that matched her fierce personality. But the majority of her time was spent caring about her family, whether it was communicating through FaceTime or a simple phone call. She always ended the call with an "I love you," and sometimes a "Don't do anything I wouldn't do."She is survived by her mother, Rosalyn (Porter) Doyle, remarried to J. Edward Doyle; three sisters, Gayle Porter-Key, Kelly Porter, and Stacie Porter-Bilger; brother-in-laws, Steve Key and Drew Bilger; niece, Sydney Bilger; and nephews, Tyler Key, Michael Key, and Cameron Bilger. She also was close to uncles and aunts; Jean Porter, Robert Porter, Sue Blauvelt, Sara Shuter, and Marvin Feldman.Visitation will be Thursday, August 31, 2017 from 4-8 p.m. at Feeney-Hornak Shadeland Mortuary. Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 1st at Holy Spirt Catholic Church with a visitation prior from 10-11 at the church.
