Michael J. Zakala 1926 - 2016ROME - Michael J. Zakala, 90, of Rome, passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 13, 2016, at his home.He was born on April 7, 1926, in Rome, the son of the late Mykola and Martha Royko Zakala. On August 31, 1946, he married Nellie Broski in Taberg. She passed away on July 22, 2005.Mike served in the
US Navy during
World War II in the European Theater from 1943-1946. After being honorably discharged, he came back to the area and went to work at Griffiss Air Force Base for over 35 years.Mike was a member of St. Mary's/St. Peter's Church. He was also a lifetime member of the Henry P. Smith Post #24 American Legion, Rome
VFW #2246, Ukrainian Club, and Rome Polish Home. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He jumped at any chance to be out in the woods or go fishing.Mike is survived by his three loving daughters, Diane James, of Oriskany, Carol Zakala, of Yorba Linda, CA, and Shirley Zakala, of Rome; four sisters, Catherine Pelano, Mary Remick, Anna Dole and Helen Edwards, all of Rome; a brother and sister-in-law, Peter and Anita Zakala, of Rome; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by four brothers, Richard, Russell, John and Steve.A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday at 11:00 AM at St. Mary's Church. Interment will take place in St. Mary's Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to call at Nunn and Harper Funeral Home, Inc., 418 N.
