Michael Gerald Downey, 96, of North Adams, MA died on November 11, 2016 at Berkshire Medical Center surrounded by his loving family.He was born on May 16, 1920 in Adams, MA, a son of the late Michael F. and Anna (Dow) Downey. He attended schools in Adams, MA and graduated from Drury High School.He was a decorated veteran of World War II as part of the US Army Field Artillery - Tank Destroyers. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge, in the 643 rd Tank Destroyer Battalion in European Theater.He was a co-proprietor of D+S Appliance Co. for 20 years, until his retirement in 1992. Prior to that, he worked at Central Radio for about 20 years as well as Mouller Brothers in Pittsfield. He was a communicant of St. Francis of Assisi Church.He was a longtime member of the North Adams VFW. He was also an amateur radio enthusiast, and was a member of the Northern Berkshire Amateur Radio Club, the American Radio Relay League, and held an extra class license. He enjoyed gardening and photography. He was a devoted to his family and enjoyed spending time with them.Mr. Downey was the widower of the late Jean Marie (Senecal) Downey, whom he married on April 21, 1951 in St. Francis Church; she died on February 14, 2015.Survivors include his daughter Kathryn Stevener and her husband, David of Bedford, NH; four sons including Michael and his wife, Susan; Timothy Downey and Christopher Downey all of North Adams, MA; and Patrick and his wife, Jennifer of Red Bank, NJ. He also leaves seven grandchildren including Staci (Michael) Lazzari, Dr. Keith Stevener, Kellyn (Cole) DeSanty, Dr. Sean (Haiging) Stevener, John Downey, Owen Downey, and Mei Ling Downey. Two great granddaughter Madalynn DeSanty and Rosalie Lazzari as well as nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, Robert and Patrick Downey, and two sisters Kathleen Scott and Bernice Brackett. FUNERAL NOTICE A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday November 15, 2016 at 10am at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church in North Adams. Burial with full military honors will follow in Southview Cemetery.
