Melba Layton 82, of Nacogdoches, passed away on Sunday, October 2, 2016, in Nacogdoches, Texas. She was born on February 2, 1934, in Nacogdoches to Mr. N.F. Luman and Katy Davis Luman. Funeral services for Mrs. Layton will be held on Thursday, October 6, 2016, at 10:00 AM at Laird Funeral Home with Bro. Paul Sevar officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 5, 2016, from 5-7PM at Laird Funeral Home. Melba was a graduate of Nacogdoches High School and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. She began her working career with Southwestern Bell Telephone Company in Houston. She retired after 36 years as Office Manager for TCA Communications in Nacogdoches. She was a long time member of Pilot Club and volunteered for HOPE Food Bank and "Meals on Wheels" for the Senior Citizens Center as well as for Medical Center Hospital in the gift shop. She married Garth P. Layton on December 24, 1955 and they celebrated over 54 years of marriage together. He preceded her in death as well as her parents, and brothers Johnnie Luman, Otho Luman, and Grady Luman. Survivors include her daughter, Terri Marshall and husband, Craig and granddaughters, Jordan Marshall and Kaci Marshall of Temple, Texas; brother, Maurice Luman and wife, Lola of El Paso, Texas; sister, Merline Mills of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; sister-in-law Billye Morrow of Ft. Worth, Texas; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be Frankie Hamby, Mike Stidham, Rex Perry, Ray Perry, Mike Perry, and Hunter Perry. The family would like to extend a special thank you to her caregivers, Mary Jo Patton, Pearlia King, Ashlan Wade, Jo Ann Roquemore , Willowbrook Rehab Center and Hospice of East Texas as well as Nan Mosley, Carolyn Sims and many other special friends for giving such loving care to her throughout her last few months on this earth.
