Melaquias "Mel" J. Martinez, 82, a lifetime resident of Las Vegas passed away on Wednesday, June 15, 2016 in Las Vegas.He was born on April 30, 1934, to Melaquias G. Martinez and Eleanor Martinez in Las Vegas.He served in the
U.S. Navy from September 1953 to August 1957. He loved music and was a percussionist in high school, the U.S. Navy and for his church group "The Guitar and Ensemble." Devoted to his faith he also served his church as a Eucharistic minister and a lector for many years. He was proud to serve his community as an independent business owner, opening an accounting firm in 1969 working diligently up until 2013. He was dedicated not only to supporting and strengthening many other businesses in town but also guiding countless individuals and families in their personal finances and tax preparation. Through all of this he managed to help raise five sons and devote his life to his loving wife of 56 years as well as serve as a solid foundation for his siblings, nieces, nephews and countless friends. With a selfless and compassionate heart he freely gave of himself to anyone in need.A Catholic, he was a member of Immaculate Conception Church in Las Vegas.He was preceded in death by his parents, Melaquias G. and Eleanor Martinez; son, Lawrence Martinez; sisters, Rosabelle Chavez and Velma Wise; brothers, Robert Martinez, Roman Martinez and Antonio Martinez.He is survived by his wife, Isabel Martinez of the family home; sons, Ralph Martinez and wife, Karla; Phillip Martinez, all of Las Vegas; Steven Martinez and wife, Donna, of Albuquerque; and Ruben Martinez and wife, Carla, of Belen; daughter-in-law, Sheri Martinez of Tijeras; grandchildren, Brian Martinez and wife, Heather; Jessica Martinez, Charles Martinez and wife, Michelle; Angelica Aragon, Andria Vigil, Jacob Martinez, Natalie Martinez, Diego Martinez, Sarah Martinez, Veronica Vazquez and Dominic Zaragoza; great-grandchildren, Gianni, Brielle, John, Annalicia, Nicholas, Rudy and Gianna; brother, Eugene Martinez of Washington State; sisters, Lucia Boyer of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Roberta Martinez of Security, Colo.; brother-in-law, Joe Chavez of Las Vegas; sisters-in-law, Della Rita Martinez of Las Vegas, Kathleen Martinez of Tallahassee, Fla.,; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. The family would like to thank the caring staff at Ambercare.Rosary services were held at 7 p.m. on Thursday at Immaculate Conception Church in Las Vegas. Funeral service will be held at noon today (Friday) also at Immaculate Conception Church with Father George V. Salazar as celebrant.Serving as casket bearers will be nephews: Brian Martinez, Charles Martinez, Jacob Martinez, Diego Martinez and longtime friends: Connie Trujillo, Louie Gold and Matias Martinez Jr. Cremation will follow services and burial will be held at a later date at the National Cemetery in Santa Fe.Visit Rogers Mortuary's website at
