Mayme Lee (Ross) Canada Brown 1920-2016Mayme Lee (Ross) Canada Brown passed Oct. 16, 2016 in Houston, Texas.Services will be as follows; public viewing Sunday, Oct. 23, 2016 from 3-6PM at Proctor's Mortuary 511 S. Pecan St. Woodville, TX. Funeral Services will be held on Monday, Oct. 24, 2016 at Pilgrim Rest Missionary Baptist Church 80 Cobb Mill Rd. Woodville, TX. Visitation will begin at 9AM until the funeral services at 11AM. Interment will be in Magnolia Cemetery, Woodville. Mayme was born on October 20, 1920 to Eddie W. Ross and Minnie M. (Graves) Ross in Scottsville, Texas. Her parents and brothers preceded her in death. Mayme attended elementary through high school in Marshall, Texas, graduating from Pemberton High School in 1942. Mayme graduated from Prairie View with a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1946 and later earned her Masters of Science from the same university. After receiving her bachelor's degree from Prairie View she moved to Louisiana where she taught for three years at Grambling University's High School. In June of 1949 Mayme accepted a position to teach in the Woodville, Texas Independent School District. That was how she met Scott High School Principal, John K. Canada whom she fell in love with and married on October 12th, 1951. She was blessed with one stepdaughter, Emily J. Canada. To Mayme's and John K's union, two children were born, Meredith Lynette and John Kingston Jr. Her husband John K. Canada died in 1964. Mayme re-married in 1980 to Isaac C. Brown who died in 1998. Mayme retired from teaching in 1983, and spent the next 32 years serving her church, community, family, and dear alma mater, Prairie View A & M University. She was a faithful member of Pilgrim Rest Missionary Baptist Church, the Grand Court of Callanthe, and served on the Tyler County Historical Commission and the Heritage Village Museum board of directors. She helped start the Martin Luther King Jr. Parade celebrated locally every year, the African-American Heritage Society, the annual Black History Month Programs, and accompanied high school students on visits to Historically Black universities across the country as part of the Willie B. Atkins program started in Vallejo, California. Mayme moved to Houston, Texas in October 2015. Mayme is survived by son John Kingston Canada, Jr. (Sheryl) of Porter, Texas; daughter Meredith Lynette Canada (Michelle) of Houston, Texas; granddaughters Satin Canada Morgan(Will) and Lessie B. Tate of Houston, Texas; grandsons Millard E. McQueen of Houston, Texas and John Kingston Canada, III (LaSheba) of Elkridge, Maryland; great grandson William Morgan III of Houston, Texas; and great granddaughters Faith Lynne Canada and Julianna Canada of Elkridge, Maryland; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.In lieu of flowers, please go to the Proctor Mortuary website ( proctorsmortuary.com) for donations made in her memory to either of her favorite organizations.
