Mary Gene Roberts Hardin passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Sunday, May 8, 2016 at the Wayne T. Patrick Hospice House. She was 90 years old. She was the daughter of Georgina and Dr. Walter B. Roberts, who served as Chair of the Winthrop College Music Department for 33 years. Mary Gene was born on March 30, 1926 and was delivered by the campus doctor. She attended Winthrop Training School and graduated from Winthrop College in 1945 as a voice major. She also attended The Juilliard School of Music. She married James C. Hardin Jr. in 1946. She was a member of the St. John's Chancel Choir for many years as well as a member of the Rock Hill Music Club, Friends of the Mint Museum, the River Hills Chapter of PEO, Trillium Garden Club, Amelia Pride Book Club, Catawba Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and The Rock Hill Debutante Club. Her quick wit, loving nature, zest for life and her loyal friendships endeared her to her many friends. She was a voracious reader and absorbed the knowledge of the world. She was preceded in death by her parents, her grandson John Barron Hardin and her husband Jim of 57 years. She is survived by her children James C. Hardin III, (Kack), Mary Hardin Phillips, (Bill) and Walter A. Hardin, (Jane), four grandchildren and two great grandchildren. The memorial service will be at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 11, 2016 at St. John's United Methodist Church, Rock Hill, with Debra Quilling Smith and Rett Haselden officiating. The family will receive friends in the Saint John's Center following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Wayne T. Patrick Hospice House, 2275 India Hook Road, Rock Hill, SC 29732, the Winthrop University Foundation, 302 Tillman Hall, Rock Hill, SC 29733, to the Mary Gene Roberts Hardin Scholarship for Excellence in Voice or the Walter B.
