Sours, Martin H. Loving husband, father and grandfather, a Professor Emeritus and a retired Navy Captain, USNR. Martin Sours passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Wednesday, February 22, 2017. He was 76. He was born on September 12, 1940 in Los Angeles, California. He attended Flintridge College Preparatory School in La Canada Flintridge, California. He graduated from the University of California at Berkeley with a BA in Political Science in 1962. At UC Berkeley, he also completed his Navy ROTC. His 26 years of commissioned service in the U.S. Navy and USNR included both surface and amphibious warfare. On active duty he served in USS Magoffin Deck/Ops Departments, planning ship to shore movements and compiling general amphibious operational orders with annexes. He also served the Commanded Naval Reserve Fleet Training Group, DDG, and AE Ship augmentation units. Under the umbrella of Navy Theater of Operations for West Pacific, he graduated from the Senior Surface Warfare Officer Training Program in Defense Economics and Decision Making at Naval War College, Newport, Rhode Island. He was promoted to Captain (06), USNR in 1989. Prior to serving in USNR, Martin pursued a career in academia by earning his MA in 1968 and Ph.D. in 1971 in International Relations from the University of Washington, Seattle, Washington. In 1971, he moved to Phoenix to teach as Associate Professor of International Studies at Thunderbird Graduate School of International Management, now known as Thunderbird School of Global Management at ASU, Glendale, Arizona. While teaching, he also served as Thunderbird Field Director, China Studies Programs in Beijing, Shanghai, Nanjing, and Qingdao, China. He was also a Visiting Professor in International Business and International Affairs, Graduate School of Foreign Trade, Sung Kyun Kwan University, Seoul, South Korea in 1973; MITI-Sponsored Institute of international Studies and Training (Boeki Kensu Center), Japan in 1977; Tunghai University, Taichung, Taiwan in 1982; School of International Studies, Yonsei University, Seoul, South Korea in 1992 and served as Faculty Field Studies Program Supervisor in South Korea and Japan through 2007. Outside teaching, he served as a member of the Board of Directors, California Alumni Association, Berkeley, California, 1998 through 2001. In recent years he served on the Catholic Cemeteries and Funeral Homes Board, a ministry of the Roman Catholic Church, Diocese of Phoenix. He also served St. Paul's Catholic Church Parish as a member of its Men's Club. Martin is preceded in death by his dear mother and father Archie and Helen Sours. He is survived by his beloved wife of 41 years Jeanne; his cherished children Ann (Michael Tallman) and John (fiance Denise Horton); and his adored grandchildren Mia, Kent and Blake Tallman. Visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 PM on Monday, February 27, 2017 at St. Paul's Catholic Church, 330 W. Coral Gables, Phoenix 85023. A funeral Mass celebrating Martin's past earthly life and now, the beginning of his new eternal life will be held at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, February 28, 2017 at St. Paul's, followed by burial at 1:30 PM at Holy Redeemer Catholic Cemetery, 23015 N.
