Marion Charles Restivo Obituary

Apr 02, 1931 - Jan 30, 2017

This obituary is administered by:
Pittsboro: Dr. Marion Charles Restivo died peacefully Sunday, January 29, 2017, at his Pittsboro home surrounded by his loving family. He was 85. Marion was born on April 1, 1931, in Baltimore, MD, to a very close Italian-American family. His parents were Carmelina DiPaula Restivo and Joseph Francis Restivo. He attended St. Mary's Elementary School in Govans and Loyola High School in Blakefield. He graduated from Loyola College in 1953 and the University of Maryland Medical School in 1957. He met his wife, Bernice Dove, at the medical school, where she worked in the Dean of Admissions Office. They married in May, 1958. Following an internship and radiology residency at the University of Maryland, Marion was commissioned as a Captain in the U.S. Army in 1962 and served as Chief of Radiology at Fort Wainwright in Fairbanks, AK. At that time, he was one of only two radiologists in the entire state. He also worked part time at St. Joseph's Hospital in Fairbanks. After completing his tour of duty, he returned to Baltimore, where he was an instructor of Radiology and later head of the Outpatient Radiology Clinic. In 1967 he moved with his family to Arlington, VA, and was a partner in the Northern Virginia Orthopedic and Allied Specialties Group and later worked for Metropolitan Radiology Associates in Washington, DC. Marion was an avid reader and in retirement put aside his professional journals to finally read the classics. But his greatest passion was his family. When his children were small, Marion took them on a tour of every state in the country. Trips to Alaska and Hawaii stateside and to France and Italy abroad will always be fondly remembered. He is survived by his wife, Bernice; his children, Kathryn Ann Restivo (William Brooks Gentry), Diane Restivo Neal (Dr. Randolph Voss Neal), and Michael Louis Restivo (Dana Branson Restivo). He is also survived by two grandchildren, Lillie Jennett Neal and Voss Marion Neal. Also surviving are his sister, Rosetta May Maggelet, and his brother-in-law, Richard Jerome Dove, and his wife, Joanne Tezak Dove, in addition to many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in memory of Marion on Friday, February 3, at 10:30 am at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 920 Carmichael Street, Chapel Hill, NC. The Very Rev. Scott E. McCue, V.F., will preside. Interment will follow at the family's plot in Chapel Hill Cemetery. A reception in his memory will follow. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Marion's name may be made to Cora's Food Pantry, 40 Camp Drive, Pittsboro, NC, 27312. Arrangements for the Restivo family are under the care of Hall-Wynne Funeral Service.
