Margarita D. Tempes Obituary

Jul 24, 1947 - Nov 05, 2016

This obituary is administered by:
Margarita Dunn Tempes passed away unexpectedly of heart complications on November 5, 2016. Margarita was born on July 24, 1947 in Guayaquil, Ecuador, the second of five siblings, to Enrique and Hortensia Dunn. She moved to California in 1971 after marrying Fred Tempes, a Peace Corps Volunteer whom she'd met while working for the Peace Corps in Guayaquil. In her first years in California, she taught migrant children in Ventura County and was a Spanish instructor for teachers-in-training at the University of Southern California and Pepperdine University. Soon after moving to Sacramento in 1978, she was selected to translate California's ballot pamphlet, a job that led to life-long work in translating and interpreting. In 1982 she started her own company, Pluperfect Translations, and soon came to be regarded as one of the most talented interpreters in Northern California. She continued to work full time until her death, interpreting throughout Northern California and coordinating the schedules of a team of talented collaborators. Although justifiably proud of Margarita's professional accomplishments, her family will first and foremost remember her as a loyal and loving spouse, caring and encouraging mother, doting grandmother, and supportive sister and aunt. She was the anchor of the family, organizing all holidays, birthdays and celebrations. She had impeccable taste and took pride in the maintenance and care of her lovely home and garden. An avid reader, she was always well informed of current events; she could often be found late at night engrossed in the Wall Street Journal or the novels of Alexander McCall Smith. She was a devout Catholic and always held strongly to her faith. Her parents, whom she loved dearly, preceded her in death; she will be laid to rest alongside them in her native country. She leaves an unfillable void for her husband Fred, daughter Krista and son-in-law Colby, young grandsons James (her "Jelly Beans") and Henry, sisters Olivia, Hortensia, Maria Rosa and brother Jaime Enrique, numerous nieces and nephews including Henry and Andrea Athens of Sacramento, and one very spoiled bulldog. Funeral services and burial will be held in Guayaquil, Ecuador. A memorial service for Margarita will be held on December 10, 11:00 a.m. at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, 660 Florin Rd. in Sacramento, with a reception to follow at the family home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sacramento Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
