Mrs. Lydia Ardrey Smoak, wife of Lee Galphin Smoak, Jr., went to be with her Lord Jesus Christ on August 21, 2016. Mrs. Smoak was the daughter of the late William Benjamin Ardrey, Jr. and Madeline Kelly Ardrey of Fort Mill, SC. She was 83 years old. Mrs. Smoak was born on April 13, 1933 in Fort Mill and was educated in the Fort Mill Schools and was a graduate of Erskine College in the Class of 1955. After graduating from college, she taught first grade in Columbia, SC and Charlotte, NC.In 1972, she and her husband were founding members and charter members of Sharon Baptist Church in Charlotte. She had a great love for children and taught the first grade and kindergarten for a number of years. She was also instrumental in forming outreach groups from the church to reach the elderly in nursing homes and retirement homes.She and her husband moved to Rock Hill in 1998. She did volunteer work at Westminster Presbyterian Church where she conducted weekly Bible devotionals at Westminster Towers for a number of years.Surviving are her husband, Lee Galphin Smoak, Jr.; her son, William Lee Smoak (Julie) and their daughter, Grace of Charlotte; her son, Dr. Charles Kelly Smoak (Beth) and their children, Kathryn, Caroline, William, Margaret and Jonathan of Fort Mill; her brother, James K. Ardrey of Rock Hill; and a number of nieces and nephews.A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held at 11am on Saturday, August 27, 2016 at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1300 India Hook Road in Rock Hill with Senior Pastor Emeritus, Dr. Shelton Palmer Sanford, III officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the Ann Burns Sanford Parlor.
