Louella Newbill-Schell passed away Friday, October 26, 2018, in Albuquerque, NM.  Louella "Ali" (Mayo) Newbill- Schell was born to William Andrew Mayo and Lexie Fleming on November 29, 1932. 

A twin and one of four girls, she grew up in Monticello, Arkansas and said she would go to the local Baptist church "every time the doors were open".  She was an excellent student, graduating from high school at 16 years old.  She left Monticello and went on to become a registered nurse, living in Alton, Illinois. 

Ali had a daughter with her first husband, an Air Force pilot, separated and divorced him and was working in Saint Louis, Missouri as a nurse when she met her second husband, a medical doctor. They moved to Hawaii where she lived and raised her three children from her second marriage, for the next 40 years.

Ali's great passions in life were her work,  her children, people, and animals.  She greatly valued education and travel.  She was a dedicated nurse for 50 years and worked primarily in the nursing home and rehab settings.   She was tender-hearted but strong-willed.  She advocated fervently for her patient's rights to a dignified life and was unafraid to speak out about injustices.  She had an amazing work ethic and would frequently work a "double" (two shifts back to back), working 3 to 11 and then 11 to 7.   Ali also was a private duty, live in nurse for a number of families in Hawaii, and adopted these families, traveling with them and loving them as her own. She often remarked that she retired just in time when paperwork had become more important than patient care.

In addition to her work, Ali dedicated countless hours of her life to her children. She loved to take photos and always knew how to have a good time! She enjoyed movies, TV, amusement parks, entertainment of all sorts, The Oscars, music, dancing, and was a vocal supporter at her kids sporting events.  She was certainly never afraid to be silly!  Her laugh was infectious and her sparkling blue eyes lit up the room.

She had a deep love for animals of all shapes and sizes!  Growing up, Ali said she would ride a white horse to school and that he would wait for her until she was ready to come home. In Kaneohe, Hawaii, there were many dogs, cats, rabbits, and guinea pigs. After retiring,  she moved with her 3rd and final husband, a career Navy boilermaker, to Anthony, New Mexico where her sister, Mickey, had lived.   There, she had Bull Mastiffs and Chihuahuas, which she inherited from her son,  and rescued and fixed many feral cats, some of them becoming house cats.  

Ali loved people and never met a stranger and would strike up conversations with anyone,  anywhere, any time.  She would give generously to various causes, big and small, "adopting" children in foreign countries,  donating to animal shelters and feeding the hungry.  Once, she even paid for a complete stranger's cosmetology school.  

As much as she loved people, she disliked wasting, trash and littering.  One of Ali's favorite sayings, one she would often tell her children and grandchildren was,  "Waste not, want not."  She was not shy about picking up trash anywhere and everywhere she went, making the world a more beautiful place.

Ali finally moved in with her daughter, in Albuquerque, NM, and lived the final years of her life in the company of her true loves, dogs, cats, birds, and horses.  She frequently traveled to see her family in Arkansas, Texas, Tennessee and Florida.

She is survived by her daughter, Donna Fowler, son, Daniel C. Newbill, III, son William A.M. Newbill (Beth), daughter, Lexie O. Birmelin (Art), four grandchildren and countless nieces, nephews cousins, great nieces and great-nephews.  

Ali lived a life full of zest and joy.   Hers was a life well lived.  She will be greatly missed but fondly remembered for loving and living with deep passion and purpose.
