Jun 09, 1926 - Nov 01, 2016

This obituary is administered by:
ST. JOE — Lois "Jean" Shockley, 90, of St. Joe passed away Saturday, Nov. 5, 2016, at Betz Nursing Home in Auburn. Jean was born on June 9, 1926, in Hicksville, Ohio, to Willard Leroy Hurni and Olive Odessa (Mettert) Hurni. She married Hearsel "Bud" Shockley on April 24, 1948, at the Saint Joe Church of Christ. Bud preceded her in death on June 7, 1997. She was a lifelong member of the Saint Joe Church. Jean retired at the Riverdale school cafeteria in Saint Joe after enjoying 18 years of service working with friends and watching grandchildren grow up through their elementary years. In her early employment years she worked at GE in Fort Wayne. Her true passion was being a homemaker, baking and cooking for her family and providing a home that was clean and comfortable. Jean often shared her gift of hospitality with family and friends. She volunteered at her local church teaching Sunday school, Vacation Bible School and on numerous committees. Jean worked alongside her husband in the local Lions Club providing many pies and pots of chili for the yearly fair tent at the DeKalb County Fair. She had an excellent work ethic, loved working outdoors, mowing yard, fishing with Bud and managing her flowers. Her children's fondest memories are her unconditional love and ability to laugh at herself. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren were adored by Jean. She would attend their sporting events even when needing a wheelchair to get around and always had treats and snacks when they visited. Surviving are her four children, Doug (Sherry) Shockley of Lawrenceville, Georgia, Matthew (Amy) Shockley of Avon, Nanette (Kevin) Ruckman of Auburn and Nila (Rick) Fuller of Saint Joe; 13 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; a brother, Maurice (Doris) Hurni of Valparaiso; and a sister, Barbara (Pete) Timmerman of Spencerville. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and a sister, Leila (Paul) Moore. Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Saint Joe Church of Christ, 508 Jefferson St., St. Joe, with visitation from 10-11 a.m. Thursday prior to the service. Pastor James Platner will be officiating. Burial will take place in Riverside Cemetery in St. Joe. Calling also will be from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the church. Memorials may be directed to the Saint Joe Church of Christ. Feller and Clark Funeral Home of Auburn is handling arrangements. To send condolences, visit www.fellerandclark.com.
