STEWARTSTOWN Leonard R. Lathrem, 84, passed away from this life on Friday, June 27, 2014, at his home after a brief battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Delores C. (Pretz) Lathrem; son, Galen Lathrem of Stewartstown; and daughters, Denise Lathrem of Belleview, Fla., Kimberly Hankins of Linthicum, Md., and Lori Kelley of Gaithersburg, Md. Leonard is also survived by 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and his brother, Gayle Lathrem of Frankfort, Ky. Viewing will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. on Monday, June 30, 2014, at J.J. Hartenstein Mortuary, Inc., 24 N. Second St., New Freedom. A funeral liturgy will begin at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church, 315 N. Constitution Ave., New Freedom. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Leonard was born on June 17, 1930, in Monterey, Ky., to the late Willie Gayle and Nellie (Raisor) Lathrem. After graduation from Owenton High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. He was stationed in Spokane, Wash., where he trained as a tail-gunner. It was there he met his wife, Delores. After his service, he attended the Central Technical Institute in Kansas City, Mo., where he earned a degree in electronics. He had a long and successful career as a Field Engineer, contracted by NASA to track space-flight missions, retiring in 1992. Leonard was an active parishioner at St. John the Baptist Church. He volunteered his time delivering Meals on Wheels and was a benefactor to numerous disadvantaged children through the Christian Foundation for Children and Aging and the Smile Train charities. Leonard enjoyed fishing, gardening, bird-watching, reading, watching sporting events, and computer gaming. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Smile Train, P.O. Box 96231, Washington, DC 20090. Smile Train is an organization that provides free corrective surgery for economically disadvantaged children throughout the world who were born with cleft lip and cleft palate. www.smiletrain.org
