ANDOVER TOWNSHIP - Lawrence J. Callaghan, 71, of Andover Township, died on Wednesday, Nov. 23, 2016, at Newton Medical Center. Larry was born on Oct. 21, 1945, in Brisbane, Australia, to the late John and Victoria Callaghan. Shortly thereafter his U.S. Army father moved the family to Swoyersville, Pa.Larry was a graduate of King's College in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., with a degree in criminal justice. He was employed by Planter's Peanuts/Nabisco in Wilkes-Barre, Pa./NYC/East Hanover, before starting GLT Sports. He also worked tirelessly as a volunteer for more than 20 years as leader and coach of Lackawanna Little League, board member of Newton American Legion Post 86 and chair of the Andover Township Recreation Committee. Larry proudly served in the United States Army, rising to the rank of first lieutenant during the
Vietnam War.In addition to his parents, Larry was predeceased by his brother, Jack Callaghan, and his in-laws, Jane and Pete Mertis, of Wilkes-Barre, Pa. Surviving him are his beloved wife of 47 years, Viginia (Ginny) Callaghan; son, Todd R. Callaghan (Sherri) and cherished grandson, Cole, of Andover Township; his sisters, Margaret Myers (Jim), of Reston, Va., and Patricia Kral (John), of New Castle, Del; brother-in-law, Jeff Mertis (Lolly), of Wilkes-Barre, Pa.; sister-in-law, Kathy Callaghan, of Wilkes-Barre, Pa.; seven nieces and two nephews.Memorial visitation will be Saturday, Dec. 10, 2016, at the Hillside Park House, Lake Iliff Road, Andover Township, from 1 to 4 p.m.
