LaVar Godfrey died on Jan. 9, 2010, of cancer. He was born on July 12, 1924, in Clarkston, Utah, to Thomas Henry and Lucy Ellen Barson Godfrey, the last of eight children. He married Lona Mae Pincock on July 2, 1954, in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple. They are the parents of four beautiful daughters, Kathleen (Chris) Merkley, Diane (Rick) Eckles, Lori Ann (Randy) Noorlander and Jo Ellen (David) Jonsson; 10 grandchildren; and three great-granddaughters. He attended Clarkston Elementary School and graduated from North Cache High School. Following graduation he trained as a welder at the Utah State Agricultural College and was employed in the shipyards at Sausalito, Calif., prior to serving in the 8th Air Force 44th Bomb Group as a gunner on a B-24 crew completing 24 missions over Germany. He graduated from Utah State University with baccalaureate and master's degrees in agricultural education. For 27 years he was the Ag teacher at Davis High School and advisor to the FFA program. He enjoyed working with young people and influenced many of his students. He also worked with the Young Farmers, the adult student organization for agricultural education.In 1982, he implemented a new computer program in farm and ranch business management through the DATC for farmers and ranchers in Davis, Weber, Box Elder, Cache and Morgan counties. From his efforts the program went statewide to serve the agricultural community. He served as president of the Utah Vocational Agricultural Teacher's Association and the Utah Vocational Association. His agricultural expertise was applied on the family farm, home gardening and answering horticultural questions for his friends and neighbors. He held many different church callings and served with his wife in the Florida, Fort Lauderdale Mission in 1988-89.As a service to the community he assisted in establishing the Kaysville Tree Farm where thousands of trees were grown and given to Kaysville residents. He was the first recipient of the Kaysville Unsung Hero award and Kaysville Father of the Year.Dad, we love you and we promise to live by your constant example of serving others until we are with you again.Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 15, at the Kaysville Central Stake Center, 555 N. (100 East) Fairfield Road, Kaysville. Friends and family may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 14, at the Lindquist's Kaysville Mortuary, 400 N. Main and Friday prior to the services from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the church. Interment will be at the Clarkston, Utah, City Cemetery.The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the LDS Perpetual Education Fund.
