Ken Hermann, age 92, of 3407 Monroe St., Two Rivers, passed away at Aurora Medical Center on Saturday, October 1, 2011, with his family at his bedside. Ken was born on January 17, 1919, in Two Rivers, son of the late Ernst and Theresa (VanderBloemen) Hermann. He went to grade school and high school in Two Rivers. On July 24, 1943, he married his high school sweetheart, Beatrice Naeser, at St. John's Ev. Lutheran Church in Two Rivers. They recently celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary. Ken proudly served in Uncle Sam's Army for four years, two months, and twelve days, being honorably discharged as a Sgt. from the Company G 14th Infantry, 71st Division. He spent 18 months in Panama from December 3, 1942 to June 1943, then returning to the States. In 1944 he was sent over to Europe to finish his time of service until 1945. His most rewarding honor was to be chosen one of the first veterans from Northeast Wisconsin to travel to Washington, D.C. on the Honor Flight on October 27, 2009, where he saluted his fallen comrades at the World War II Memorial. He was a lifetime member of St. John's Church, where he was a money counter for over 50 years. Ken also was a director of the Shoreline Credit Union for over 40 years. He worked at Hamilton Mfg. Co. for 43 years, retiring as a quality control supervisor. While there, he was a member and past president of the old Hamilton Foreman's Club. Ken was a member of V.F.W. Post # 1248 since 1943, proudly serving on the firing squad in marching parades and funerals. Ken was active in golf until the age of 90 and was the last living charter member of the Thanksgiving Day Golf Classic, golfing for over 60 years. Still at the age of 91, he was an avid biker, you would see him biking through the streets of Two Rivers always wearing his white helmet. In his younger years Ken was very active in sports. From 1938 to 1955, he played ball on the original Polar Bear baseball team and there too was the last surviving member. Giving up baseball, he started playing fast pitch softball with the Gauthier Meats team. Later he played slow pitch with the old Liebrau and White Cap teams, finally ending up playing with the old Ciha's Champ team. By then was 63 years old. Other sporting activities included bowling, a WIAA basketball official for 25 years working with notables such as Ted Scallisi, Bob Sullivan, Rudi Prucha, Orville Perry and Floyd Dietzo. Ken was a junior baseball instructor for 7th and 8th grade boys for 5 years and played with the Rambler football team.Ken is survived by his wife: Beatrice Hermann; one daughter: Connie (Dan) Blashka, Two Rivers; two sons: Lee (Donna) Hermann, Manchester, Tenn. And Todd (Vonnie) Hermann, Sheboygan; five grandchildren: Tammy, Tiffany, Ryan, Derrick and Tessa; two great-granddaughters: Sarah and Taryn; two step grandchildren: Steve and Amanda; and a step great grandson: Brayden. He is further survived by two sisters-in-law: Jean Kipp, Lakeland, Fla. and Patricia (Frank) Bonfigt, Two Rivers, along with nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his in-laws, one brother, one sister, four brothers-in-law, a grandson: Jason Hermann and one infant granddaughter: Becky Blashka.Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, October 5, 2011, at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church 17th & East Park St., Two Rivers. Officiating at the service will be the Rev. David Arndt with burial to held in Pioneer Rest Cemetery, Two Rivers. Military honors will be accorded by members of V.F.W. Post # 1248 and American Legion Post # 165 of Two Rivers immediately following the service. The family will greet relatives and friends at the church on Wednesday morning from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service at 11:30 a.m. There will be no visitation this evening.Deja & Martin Funeral Chapels,1506 18th St., Two Rivers, is assisting the Hermann family with funeral arrangements.
