Keara Austin Warang Bells McManus Obituary

Nov 21, 1995 - Apr 11, 2016

This obituary is administered by:
Warang's Amazing Life Keara Austin Warang Bells McManus was born on November 21, 1995 in Tamuning, Guam. To all who knew her, Warang (or Waddy) was one of the happiest, most positive people you knew. She made the decision each day regardless of the circumstance to be happy, and she spread that joy and love of life to everyone who met her. Warang shared when she was 17, "It sounds weird to say that I'm not scared of death. The life that I've lived so far I wouldn't have any regrets as far as what has happened to me or the choices I have made. If I were to die tomorrow, I don't think I would be sad about it because I know I've done my best every day. I've tried to live every day to have one point of happy and make someone smile or laugh and to be with my family and tell them I love them." Warang passed away at Doernbecher's Children's Hospital on 04/11/16. Warang had the love and support of a big Pacific Islander/Irish family. She loved being part of a large family, loved cultural traditions, and strived to keep that heritage prominent in all aspects of her life. She is survived by her parents, Mark and Suzanne McManus; her six siblings: Edwin Jerome (EJ) and his wife Mary, Matthew, Nolan, Sechereang, Olikong, and Soladoab; her nephew, Ethan, and nieces, Emma Oyaol and Ellie Jean Ocheraol; her grandparents: Jose Martinez and Patricia Castro Flores; Bertha Bells and John Carino; and many aunties, uncles, and cousins. Waddy also formed many close friendships and she loved and cherished each of them wholeheartedly. We will miss her every day. Warang graduated from South Eugene High School in 2014 and attended Oregon State University in 2015. Her ambitious spirit led her to pursue a profession as a pediatric oncologist or a pediatric surgeon. She became all too familiar with this career choice after several battles with cancer: the first when she was 15-months old (hepatoblastoma), the second when she was 13 years old (Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia), and the third when she was 19 years old (also ALL). Warang's pediatric oncologist when she was 13 also was her pediatric oncologist at age 19, Dr. Linda Stork. The enormous amount of respect that Warang had for Dr. Stork greatly influenced and motivated her goals. Warang loved to spend time with her family or hang out with her friends. She appreciated just being together and had strong relationships. She enjoyed reading, dancing, watching movies, hiking, soaking up the sun, anything active and outdoors, cooking, baking, and playing with her nieces and nephew. Warang shared many times that she wanted to be the kind of aunty that she had with so many as she was growing up. She wanted to be an active part of their lives and make sure they knew how much she loved them. She played hide and seek for hours on end, played with bubbles outside, in the doll house, hoops and trampolines, went on walks, went to gymnastics and basketball, baseball, and football games. She opened their eyes to songs and dances and funny videos that filled the house with countless hours of laughter. Warang was wise beyond her years, and shared the following in an audio clip: "Don't let those treatments define who you are because that doesn't define who you are. You define who you are. I'm not going to let cancer win. It's not going to make me an angry and sad person. I am a happy person. I choose to be a happy person." Cancer did not win. Cancer did not change the way that Warang lived and enjoyed her life. Warang is forever our champion. The legacy she has left in her twenty years on earth will forever live on in everyone who knew and loved her. A memorial service is planned for Saturday, April 23, 2016 at 1:00 pm at Emerald Community Fellowship in Eugene, OR (or on Friday, April 29, 2016 at 9:00am at Santa Teresita Church in Guam). Donations can be made to the Doernbecher's Children's Hospital at 700 SW Campus Dr., Portland, OR 97239 in loving memory of Keara Warang McManus.
