Chantry, Kathryn "Kate" L.CHANTRY, Kathryn "Kate" L. 86, died peacefully on November 22, 2016, at the Bon Secours Community Hospice House in Richmond, Va. In her final hours, she was surrounded by her loving children, David (Newtown, Pa.), Stephen (Williamsburg, Va.), Mark (Culpeper, Va.), Mary Ellen (Arlington, Va.), Kathryn Helen (Garrett Park, Md.), Agatha (Broadlands, Va.), Jeanette (Fuquay Varina, N.C.), Peter (Charlotte, N.C.), Sarah (Fuquay Varina, N.C.) and Priscilla (Bala Cynwyd, Pa.). She also will be lovingly remembered by her sons and daughters-in-law, her 26 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Kate was born on February 2, 1930, in Delancey, N.Y., the daughter of Veyrill E. Laidlaw and Kathryn Agatha Flynn, both deceased. Predeceased by her husband of 56 years, David "Dave" Lawrence Chantry; and her brother, John "Jack" Laidlaw; she is survived by her sister, Elizabeth McNulty of San Diego, Calif. A graduate of the Traphagen School of Fashion Design in New York City, Kate briefly worked in a dress shop owned by Ethel Leigh Traphagen, founder of the School before working in radio (WKOP) in Binghamton, N.Y. In 1952, she married Dave, the love of her life. For 28 years, she and Dave raised their family of 10 children in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. and then spent their retirement years in Southern Shores, N.C. and Richmond, Va. As new found golf-lovers, she and Dave spent many years as members of the Duck Woods Country Club in Southern Shores. Kate will be remembered for her strong Catholic faith, witty storytelling and fun-loving pranks. An excellent seamstress and baker, her creative talents also extended to oil and watercolor painting and calligraphy. Kate, a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, relished her ancestry and maintained an oral history of both sides of the family. Kate was a devoted mother and wife, selflessly dedicated to her children and husband. In the community, her service to others included a deep commitment to the St. Mary's Catholic parish in Wappingers Falls, N.Y., organizing Christmas fairs, teaching CCD and making significant contributions to the Mother's Guild and CYO. She also was a lector and Eucharistic Minister for many years at the Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Kitty Hawk, N.C. Family will be receiving friends during a memorial visitation on Sunday afternoon, December 4, from 3 to 5 p.m., at Bliley's-Chippenham, 6900 Hull Street Rd., Richmond, Va. The Funeral Mass will be Monday morning, December 5, 10:30 a.m., at St. Edward the Confessor Catholic Church, Richmond, Va. An online registry is available at www.blileys.com.
