Judith Kavanaugh Badger Obituary

Jun 06, 1942 - Jan 08, 2016

This obituary is administered by:
June 6, 1942 - November 8, 2016Judith Kavanaugh Badger died on Tuesday, November 8, 2016 at her home in Bulverde. She was born on June 6, 1942 in Chicago, Illinois to the late Leo and Virginia Kavanaugh. She graduated from Longwood Academy of our Lady in Chicago and soon thereafter married Chuck Badger, her devoted husband of 53 years.Judy and Chuck raised their three boys in Chicago; Dublin, California; Ogden, Utah and Uvalde, Texas. While raising a family, she received a Bachelor of Science degree in Child and Family Psychology and Social Work from Weber State University in Ogden and a Master of Social Work from the University of Utah in Salt Lake City.Judy was an advocate for children. Her profession brought her much fulfillment and included positions as a child custody investigator and expert witness for many courts across Texas, assistant chief probation officer overseeing juvenile probation in Uvalde County and Children's Protective Services in Ogden. She also enjoyed teaching juvenile law courses at Sul Ross State University and the Middle Rio Grande Law Enforcement Academy. She especially valued working in the field with troubled children - going on late-night domestic-disturbance calls with police and taking at-risk juvenile offenders to Scared Straight programs at local prisons where she was often the only female in the group.Judy was very proud of her Southside Chicago Irish-Catholic roots and was blessed with an outgoing and empathetic personality. She possessed a unique and special gift to make immediate connections with others. She was also known for her creative talents, and enjoyed creating and selling stained glass stepping stones and jewelry at local fairs and markets. She derived great comfort from her Catholic faith, especially in her role with the Stephen Ministry at St. Joseph Catholic Church - Honey Creek. Her greatest joy, however, came from spending time with her six grandchildren and watching them grow. They all adored their Nana.Judy is survived by her husband, Chuck, and their children, Steven Badger and wife, Renee, of Dallas, David Badger and wife, Jennie, of San Antonio, and Jeffrey Badger of New York City. She is further survived by six grandchildren: Brian Badger of Dallas, Sean Badger of Ogden, Brooke Badger of Salt Lake City, Andrew Badger of Austin, and Erin and Eleanor Badger of San Antonio. Her sisters, Pat Tanona of Rhode Island and Debbie Voves of Chicago, also survive her.Services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, November 12, 2016, at Porter Loring Mortuary North, 2102 North Loop 1604 East, San Antonio, Texas 78232.
