Joseph T. CorsoAGE: 93 • RivertonJoseph T. Corso, age 93, of Riverton, NJ, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family and friends at Cooper Hospital in Camden, NJ on Jan. 3, 2017. Joe was born on Dec. 2, 1923 in Bridgeport, CT to Sicilian immigrants, Frank and Rose LaMastra Corso.He graduated from Central High School in Bridgeport, CT in 1941. He entered Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T.) on a full merit scholarship in the Fall of 1941, but his studies were interrupted by his service in WW II. He enlisted in the Reserve Corps in 1943 and entered the Army Specialist Training Program at Stanford University, CA, where he won the divisional boxing championship for the 115 pound class. He was later assigned to the 71st Infantry Division of General Patton's Third Army and served two years oversees in France, Germany, Austria and Czechoslovakia where he worked mainly as an advance scout. For his Army service he wears the "American Theater," "Army of Occupation of Germany," "European-African-Middle Eastern Theater," "Good Conduct" and "Victory" medal ribbons. He was discharged in the grade of technical sergeant in 1946. He was intensely proud to be a veteran. Upon his return from the war, he completed his studies at M.I.T. and graduated in 1948 as an honor student with a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering. He subsequently went on to receive a Masters in Aeronautical Engineering from Cornell University.Following his graduation, he was elected as an associate of the Cornell chapter of Sigma Xi, a national honorary society for the encouragement of original investigation in science. Following his graduation from M.I.T., he worked in the research division of the United Aircraft Corporation in East Hartford, CT. Subsequently, he was an aerodynamicist in the advance design group at Sikorsky Aircraft in Bridgeport, CT. He was also employed by Beech Aircraft in Wichita, KA. It was there in Kansas where he met his beloved wife of more than 50 years, Lily Sevart Corso, who passed in May 2016. Together they eventually settled in Riverton, NJ, where they lived for over 40 years. For most of this time, he was employed by RCA (which became Lockheed Martin) in Moorestown, NJ. He played a significant role in the development and ongoing work of the AEGIS Missile Program, receiving the Annual Technical Excellence Award from RCA in 1977.Joe was very passionate about his job and enjoyed going into the office up until his retirement at 90 years of age. He developed many lasting friendships during his career and was a favorite mentor to young engineers in the company. He will be remembered as an avid skier, cigar smoker, and owner of Siberian Huskies, with a great sense of humor who lived a good, full, long life.Joe is survived by his brother, Philip F. Corso, MD and wife Betty; nephews Philip Corso Jr. (wife Vickie) and Christopher Corso and niece Christina Corso as well as many nieces and nephews from his wife Lily's side. He will be missed dearly by all who knew him. The family is appreciative of the care and attention given to Joe by the staff at the Evergreens, his companion, Carl Rossino and his friend Joe Roman.A viewing will be held at Weber Funeral Home 112 Broad Street in Riverton, NJ on Thursday, January 5th, 6-9pm. A second viewing will take place at Sacred Heart R.C. Church 4th Street and Linden Ave. Riverton, NJ on Friday, January 6th, 9:30-11:00am with a mass to follow 11:00-Noon. Internment will take place at Oak Lawn Cemetery in Fairfield, CT on Saturday, January 7th at 11am.
