Joseph Lampshire Moran passed away at Carebridge in Jacksonville on Sunday May 28, 2014, just shy of his 92nd birthday.

Joe was born on June 11, 1922, the oldest child of Florence and Joseph H. Moran in Pittsfield, Mass. He was a graduate of Pittsfield High School and Ottawa University in Kansas.

Joe was predeceased by his beloved wife, Margaret (Peggy) Moran, to whom he was married for 59 years.

He leaves three much-loved children, Jane White and her husband, Christopher of Weston, Mass.; Karen Kuhn and her husband John of Sheffield, Mass.; and David Moran and his wife Nancy of Maysville. Mason and Peter White, Jacob, Rebecca and Eric Kuhn, and Daniel and Johnathan Moran cherished him as a grandfather. His brother, Stanley M. Moran passed away 28 years ago.

Joe was very proud of the fact that he was in the Fifth Marine Division in World War II, where he fought at Iwo Jima, one of the most intense battles of the war.

His red hair, a penetrating intellect and an indestructible demeanor gave him the nickname "Rusty Nails" by his fellow Marines.

After the war, he returned to Pittsfield to take over his father's real estate business, which he ran for many years while also teaching at Taconic High School.

He had a passion for big cars, reading voraciously, learning new things and beautiful scenery, especially the Berkshire vistas. Joe moved from Pittsfield, Mass., to Pawley's Island, S.C., where he lived an active retirement life with his precious wife for 30 years.

A private service for Joe will be held in the Pittsfield area in August.
