Joseph Baron Obituary

Nov 12, 1923 - Feb 12, 2017

This obituary is administered by:
Baron, Joseph Joseph Baron age 93, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on February 12, 2017. He was born on November 12, 1923 to Andrew and Julia Baron in Grand Marsh, WI and graduated from Star Grade School in Adams Township. Joseph enlisted in the Navy, proudly serving his country during WWII. His ship, the USS Meriwether took part in the invasion of Okinawa. The crew was credited with shooting down a Japanese suicide plane and rescuing a number of sea survivors. The ship unloaded the first Marine occupation forces on the conquered soil of Japan. After the war, Joe continued to serve in the US Naval Reserves. While working at American Motors in Kenosha, Wisconsin he met his future bride, Joann R. Burg. They were married in 1951 at St. Mary's Catholic Church and they remained lifelong members of the parish. Joseph joined the Kenosha County Highway Department as a machine operator, a job he loved and retired from in 1988. He always claimed to be the "one guy" working if you saw a group guys standing around. Joseph had many skills and hobbies. He was a talented welder, dowser (someone who uses a divining rod to find underground water) beekeeper, gardener, hunter and craftsman. He built his own home in Kenosha in 1957 where he lived until 2012. It was in that house that Joe and Joann raised their six children. His gardens were a source of produce that fed the family all year. Joe was generous, honest, hard working and strong. Joseph is survived by his wife Joann (nee Burg), a brother Edward Baron, daughters Rosanne Baron-Shurilla(Kevin), Dr. Julie Baron, Susan Goens, Carol Sebesta (David), and son Timothy Baron (Barbara). Six grandchildren: Alexander and Christina Goens, Alison and Sean Sebesta, Michael and Daniel Baron and four great grand children. He was predeceased by his parents, sisters Col. Marie Proffitt, Estelle Nowachek, Amelia Baron his brothers Emil, Albert, Andrew Jr., William Baron and a daughter Mary Ann Baron. Memorial Visitation at the Funeral Home FRIDAY, February 17, 2017 from 5:00-7:00 PM. Additional Visitation Saturday from 9:30-11:00 AM at ST. MARY CATHOLIC CHURCH 7307 40th Avenue Kenosha, WI. Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 A.M. Military Honors to follow. The family is grateful for the support from the staff at Harborview Village in Greendale, Villa St. Francis and Seasons Hospice. In lieu of flowers we ask that you be kind and generous to a complete stranger. Tell them it's from "Joey".
