John R. Ward87, of Delphi, passed from this life on January 14, 2017 at St. Elizabeth Rehab Center in Delphi after a short illness. John was born on July 9, 1929 at Petitt, Indiana to the late Robert E. and Bessie (Lohrman) Ward. He was a 1948 graduate of Adams School.John married Betty R. Voyles on October 10, 1953 at her parents' home in southern Delphi. Betty passed away on June 7, 2009.Mr. Ward served in the
US Navy during the
Korean conflict as an Ordinance Mate.John farmed for many years. He was an innovative farmer, contouring his farm for maximum yield and erosion control, with help from the ASCS. John had one of the first "Trench Silos" in Adams Township. He left farming in 1967 to work at the RCA Cabinet factory in Monticello. He retired from Peters-Revington in 2003.John was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Delphi where he enjoyed singing in the choir. He was a member of the American Legion for over 72 years.John enjoyed being in the outdoors, going to garage sales and reading about ancient civilizations.Surviving are sons: Brice E. Ward of Delphi and Randy J. Ward (wife: Cathy) of Brownsburg; grandsons: Brandon J. Ward (Ashley) and Matthew A. Ward (Kelly); great grandchildren: Halle and Harrison Ward; and sister, Joan Slavens of Frankfort.Along with his wife and parents, John was preceded by 2 siblings.Visitation will be from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on January 18, 2017 at Davidson Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be at the Davidson Funeral Home on Thursday, Jan. 19, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be in Masonic Cemetery, Delphi. Military Graveside Rites by the Carroll County Honor Guard.Memorial Contributions in John's memory may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, Delphi.
