JOHN F. OPPOLD, 77 PEARL CITY - John F. Oppold, 77, of Pearl City passed away on Monday, March 24, 2014, at his home. He was born on July 16, 1936, in Freeport, son of Joseph and Genora (Yoder) Oppold. He married Shirley Sturtevant at the Salem United Church of Christ in Loran on Feb. 19, 1955. He and his wife farmed all their lives, first in JoDaviess County, and then in Stephenson County. John was a member of the Salem United Church of Christ at Loran. He enjoyed dancing, hunting, being outdoors, farming, family, friends, and playing Euchre. Surviving are his wife, Shirley; his four children, Stephen (Penny) Oppold of Pearl City, Brenda Hass (Phil Stiles) of Pearl City, Marcia Oppold of Freeport, and Linda Oppold (Bill Bowman) of Freeport; nine grandchildren, Shelly (Gregg) Bunting, Michael (Sylvia) Oppold, Cory Oppold, Ashley (Leo) Hernandez, Aaron (Carrie) Hass, Lindsay (Jason) Pleggen Kuhle, Sarah Hass (George Ellis), Elizabeth (Jon) Miller, and Edward Abel; three step-grandchildren; eleven great- grandchildren; three sisters, Marie Pieper and Betty Duray of Freeport, and Vera Boswell of Winnebago; and two sisters-in-law, Kathleen Oppold and Shirley Oppold. Preceding him in death were his parents; a step-granddaughter; sister, Joyce Rees; and two brothers, Frank Oppold and Joseph Oppold Jr. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 29, 2014, at the Salem United Church of Christ in Loran, with Pastor Phillip Brown officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Offenheiser-Schwarz Funeral Home in Pearl City. In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established in his memory for the Ebenezer-Salem United Church of Christ and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
