John J. McEvoy passed away peacefully in his sleep on Monday, October 24, 2016 on his 91 st birthday. He was born on October 24, 1925 in Okmulgee, Oklahoma and spent his childhood in St. Louis and later in Chicago. After graduating from Campion High School in 1943, he enlisted in the army to serve his country in WWII. As a member of the 398th Infantry Regiment, 100th Infantry Division, he fought in one of the bitterest battles of Germany in Heilbronn, and was wounded on April 7, 1945 for which he received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. He was honorably discharged after spending over 18 months in army hospitals recovering from his injuries. John married his love, Margaret Crosbie Sweet, on August 9, 1947 and graduated with a degree in engineering from MIT in 1951. He accepted an engineering position with the E.I. DuPont de Nemours and Company, and enjoyed his DuPont management responsibilities in the US, Asia, and South America throughout his long career. He and Margaret settled in Wilmington, Delaware and raised 7 children. John was an avid sailor, skier and tennis player into his late 70's, and was active in his local Power Squadron's chapter and the Diocesan Building Committee for the Catholic Diocese in Wilmington. His dedication to the church was recognized by local clergy and he was nominated for, and received, a papal blessing and the rarely given Benemerenti medal which is awarded for long and exceptional service to the church. John was preceded in death by his loving wife, Margaret, and is survived by his sons John McEvoy, Kevin McEvoy and wife Maria, Tim McEvoy and wife Elaine, Chris McEvoy and wife Nancy, and daughters Brigid and husband Larry Russo, Mary Beth Webster, Casey and husband Steve Lazar, and 17 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. A memorial mass will be held at Sts. Simon and Jude Catholic church in The Woodlands on Saturday, November 12 at 11:30 am, with a reception to follow in the church hall.
