John "J.E" DelahoussayeLAFAYETTE - Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, September 5, 2017 at 10:30 AM at a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Genevieve Catholic Church in Lafayette for John "J.E" Delahoussaye, 87, who died peacefully on September 2, 2017 at his residence in Lafayette, with his family by his side. Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery.Rev. Brian Taylor, Pastor of St. Genevieve Catholic Church, will officiate the Mass and will conduct the funeral services.J.E. was born on March 3, 1930 in Lafayette, Louisiana. He was the 5th child of thirteen children. In 1947 he graduated from Lafayette High School and in the same year he was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout with the Evangeline Scouts Troop 52. In 1948 J.E. enlisted with the United States Air Force for one year Active Duty and six years Active Reserve. During his first year of active duty he was stationed at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio and Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls, Texas. During that time he studied and worked as an aircraft mechanic. He was called back for a second year of Active Duty and was placed in G2 Intelligence of the 509th Bomb Wing achieving the rank of Sergeant. After the military, his love of aviation led him to Spartan School of Aeronautics in Tulsa, Oklahoma where he earned his aviation mechanics license. Upon returning to Lafayette J.E. completed his commercial pilot's license and was the first employee of Paul Fournet Air Service as a pilot mechanic. In 1957 he went to work for Union Oil of California as a pilot and retired after 30 years of service. J.E. flew twin engine sea planes and numerous corporate aircraft throughout his career. J.E. was gifted and known throughout his family for his mechanical skills. He often said "I can fix anything but a broken heart." He volunteered as a maintenance man for many years at the Lafayette Community Health Care Clinic while his wife Shirley managed the medical records department. J.E. also served as President of Les Vieux Chenes Senior Mens Golf Association from 1997-2000 and was on the Board of Directors at the Acadian Memorial Museum in St. Martinville dedicating his time to Acadian genealogy. The museum honored him with the award of L'Ordre du Bon Temps in 2013. J.E. and his wife Shirley cherished their camp at Toledo Bend. A camp he proudly built from the ground up. He loved fishing and spending time with his family and his annual Dirty Dozen Men's Group. The camp provided him a lifetime of memories with friends and family.J.E. focused his life on being uplifting and positive. He valued relationships and was truly in his element when surrounded by people. He was most joyful when visiting and sharing stories with others. J.E. is survived by his daughter, Paulette Crawford and her husband Billy of Mandeville and their children, Chase, Casey, and Catie; His son, John and his wife Bertha of Breaux Bridge, and their children, Daniel and his wife Katrina, their child Andrew, Dane and his wife Blair and their child Jolie; His son, Phillip and his wife Holly of The Woodlands, Texas and their children, Max and Ross; His daughter, Janet Delahoussaye and her children, Jessie, Julie, Dana and her husband Brandon, Danielle, Kimberly and her husband Daniel and their child Emma.J.E. is also survived by his brothers, Robert Delahoussaye, Roland Delahoussaye, and Patrick Delahoussaye; and his sisters, Ada Barry, Genevieve Langlinais and Theresa Guidry.J.E. was preceded in death by his beautiful bride of 52 years. Shirley Lee Delahoussaye; his parents, James Wesley "Pete" Delahoussaye and Therese Martin Delahoussaye; and his brothers, Alfred Delahoussaye, James "Jimmy" Delahoussaye, Tommy Delahoussaye, Curtis Delahoussaye, Michael Delahoussaye, and Henri Delahoussaye. His family would like to express their sincere gratitude to all the wonderful people who helped care for J.E. Our thanks to Dr. Mitchell Dugas for years of compassionate care, the wonderful people of Hospice of Acadiana, and a special thanks to his home caregivers who were loving and caring to J.E. when he needed it most.
