ANGOLA — Joan (Roberts) Ryan, 88, of Angola, passed away on Monday, January 19, 2015, at Park View Nursing Center in Edgerton, Ohio. She was born on May 17, 1926, to John and Mabel (King) Roberts in Caeriphilly South Wales, Great Britain. She married Charles Arthur "Art" Ryan on January 23, 1946, in Caerphilly, South Wales, and came to America on a ship full of "war brides." She was an avid singer, and appeared in many community theater musicals. She was very well known on the Angola square, as she worked in a variety of dress shops. When she retired she received the key to the city from Mayor Lett. Joan leaves behind five children, Jennifer (Richard) Romine of Angola, Annette Schueler of Angola, Katherine (Robert) Thomas of Milton, Georgia, David (Stephanie) Ryan of Angola and Martin (Kim) Ryan of Angola; 16 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by two sisters, Decima and Ruth of South Wales. Joan was preceded in death by her husband, Charles on February 23, 2012; her parents; three brothers, Raymond, Arthur and John; and seven sisters, Rose, Mabel, Gertrude, Jenny Sarah, May and Rhoda. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, January 23, 2015, at H.E. Johnson & Sons Funeral Home, 108 S. West St., Angola, with Pastor John Coney of the Angola Christian Church officiating. Burial will follow in Circle Hill Cemetery in Angola. Calling is Thursday, January 22, 2015, from 3-7 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Steuben County , and for her friends and family in Wales, memorials can be made to Mt. Carmel Baptist Church in Britain.
