Jesse Philip (Phil) Davis, 76, died December 12, 2016, after a long and courageous battle with lung cancer. He was born on April 21, 1940 to Burdette Glenn and Lucille Braswell Davis, and raised in Nash County. He was predeceased by his oldest sister, Mollie Davis Salmons of Gastonia, and his older brother, Maxwell Glenn Davis of New York. Phil moved to Raleigh when he was 22. A graduate of the Northwestern University School of Mortgage Banking in Chicago, Phil spent his career in Raleigh and Hendersonville as a mortgage banker at Cameron Brown and First Citizens Bank. He lived for nearly 30 years in Smithfield, a town he loved and cherished. After his retirement, he spent many happy hours at the family farm in Pine Level doing major improvements to a farmhouse that was built in the mid-1800s. The family has enjoyed Thanksgivings at the farm and farmhouse for the past 40 years. Phil also enjoyed growing Japanese maple trees at the farm in his small nursery. He was a member of the Country Club of Johnston County for many years, where he was an avid golfer and formed numerous lasting friendships. He was also a longtime member of the Johnston Community College Foundation golf committee. Phil was an active member of Centenary United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Margaret Wellons Davis; his daughter, Elizabeth Davis Baker and husband Brian of Smithfield; and his son, James Andrew Wellons (Drew) Davis and Lindsey Listrom of Raleigh. He is also survived by his sister, Portia Davis Prevo and husband Frank of Raleigh. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, December 14, 2016 at Centenary United Methodist Church in Smithfield, followed by burial at Riverside Cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday, December 13 at Centenary United Methodist Church in Wesley Hall from 5-7pm.In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Centenary United Methodist Church, or the James A., Jr. and Janice F.
