Stevens, Jean Holtman,94, died with the Holy Spirit at her side on September 29, 2017, at Nazareth Home in Louisville.Jean was born on Dec. 16, 1922, in Louisville to her parents, Marie Steinlochner Holtman and Henry Aloysius Holtman, and grew up in the Upper Highlands. Along with her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Arthur Hopkins Stevens and six of her seven siblings - Bernie Holtman, Charlotte Smith, Bobby Holtman, Ruth Arbegust, Jack Holtman, and Evelyn Gohmann. She is survived by her youngest sister, Margie Gohmann (David).She is also survived by her two daughters, Jenny Stevens Schroerlucke (Joseph) and Jeannine Stevens Blazin (Gary), both of Louisville; and her son, Tom Stevens (Kathy) of Nashville, TN. Other survivors include three grandchildren - Annie Hagaman (Ben) of Chattanooga, TN; Ellen Dempsey (Brian) of Memphis, TN; and Arthur Blazin (Sarah) of Louisville. She was blessed with a great-grandson, Burton Hagaman, age 2.Jean graduated from St. Francis of Assisi elementary school and Sacred Heart Academy (with honors, class of 1940) and earned a scholarship to Ursuline College (now Bellarmine University). In 1977 she earned a B.A. degree from St. Mary-of-the-Woods College in Terre Haute, Indiana, achieving a lifelong goal. She was a former member of Holy Spirit parish and a member of Our Lady of Lourdes parish, where she sang in the choir and was a member of the Altar Society and a Eucharistic minister.She was an exemplary and loyal teacher for 30 years, primarily for the Archdiocese of Louisville, having taught at Our Lady of Lourdes, St. Gabriel, Notre Dame Academy (formerly St. Helen School), and Holy Spirit. She also taught at Meredith-Dunn School.Jean was a member of the Foster Care Review Board of Kentucky, Bellarmine Women's Council, Queen's Daughters, Little Sisters of the Poor Auxiliary, and the Louisville Historical Society. She also loved volunteering as an usher at the Kentucky Center for the Arts and Actors Theater.Visitation will be Tuesday, October 3 from 3 p.m. - 8 p.m. at Highlands Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Road. Special memories and favorite stories of Jean's life will be shared at Highlands at about 6 p.m.A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Nazareth Home, 2000 Newberg Road, Wednesday, October 4 at 11 a.m. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery.In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Mass of the Air, 508 Breckenridge Lane, Louisville, 40207; or to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, 153 Thierman Lane, Louisville, 40207 to accelerate a cure for Type 1 diabetes.
