James Soik Obituary

Oct 01, 2017 - Jan 05, 2017

This obituary is administered by:
Soik, JamesJames Leo Soik, 74, of Stevens Point, passed away at his home on Thursday. Jim had fought the odds after a heart attack three years ago and beat the doctors' expectations. Such was his legacy, defying what most would consider conventional wisdom and living his life on his own terms, willing to accept the consequences. He was his own man and steadfast in his beliefs - faith, family and his fellow man. He generously gave to those in need and he was a student of philosophy, particularly St. Thomas Aquinas and did not hesitate to expound his beliefs. Jim loved a good discussion, whether it be politics, economics or gardening. He was well read, putting him on solid ground for his positions on a variety of subjects.Jim was born on Oct. 19, 1942, in Chicago, to Helen and Leo Soik. He developed his work and personal ethics on the family farm. After the passing of both parents at an early age, Jim found himself as the man of the house to his younger brother and sisters. He graduated from P.J. Jacobs High School and attended the University of Miami, Ohio, for engineering. He went on to Central State College and then to a job as a chemist in San Francisco. Returning to his roots in Stevens Point, Jim held a variety of jobs in the area and finally found his calling as a handyman to a devoted cadre of client friends. He spent his later years reading and was always available with a helping hand for his friends and good conversation. He was preceded in death by his parents, Helen and Leo; and two sisters, Joan Soik and Mary Gwidt. Survivors include his brother, Tom (Sandi) of Sturgeon Bay; two sisters, Sharon Adams (Greg Babino) of Stevens Point, and Sue (Larry) Doxrude of Plover; aunt, Berniece Ward of Stevens Point; brother-in-law, Leroy Gwidt of Stevens Point; and numerous nieces and nephews.Jim was a member of St. Peter Parish, where, along with his family and friends, his kind and thoughtful presence will be missed. In lieu of flowers, a memorial in his name will be established for the Salvation Army. The Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2017, at St. Peter Catholic Church in Stevens Point with the Rev. Arul Joseph V. officiating. Burial will take place in the spring at St. Bronislava Cemetery in Plover. Visitation will be in the St. Faustina Room of St. Peter Church on Wednesday morning from 9:30 a.m. until the time for Mass. Pisarski Funeral Homes are honored to be assisting the family.
