James Norcom Jackson Obituary

Mar 07, 1931 - Dec 11, 2016

This obituary is administered by:
James Norcom Jackson, Jr. passed away while surrounded by his family on Sunday, December 11th after a brief illness. He was born on March 7, 1931, the son of James Norcom and Abby Jackson and was the brother of Abby Jackson Parkerson and Adele Jackson Sypesteyn (deceased). He spent an idyllic childhood in Covington until the age of 11 when his family returned to New Orleans due to rationing during World War II. At his earliest opportunity, in 1968, Norcom moved back to Covington with his wife and children. Norcom served as the President of S. Jackson & Son, a firm founded by his grandfather in 1902 and was a co-founder and a senior officer of the Jackson Kearney Group, a Custom House Brokerage, Warehousing and Stevedoring concern, until his retirement. He was a former board member of The New Orleans Board of Trade, the New Orleans Museum of Art, The Wiener Corporation and The Poitevent Land Company. Norcom will be remembered for his extraordinary eye for art, his passion for photography and for his whimsical driftwood sculptures. He furnished the homes of all his children with beautiful finds and he was generous to a fault with all sorts of information and recipes, with the exception of sharing the whereabouts of his favorite antique haunts! Norcom was happiest when surrounded by family and friends and he cherished times spent with dear friends at Perdido Bay, Alabama where he vacationed annually for over 40 years. He will be remembered for his fine culinary skills, his terrific sense of humor, his love of family and friends and his ability to tell wonderful stories. Norcom was predeceased by his beloved wife Mary Alice Reiss Jackson and his beloved son Gordon Orme Jackson and will be deeply missed by his two daughters - Elizabeth Jackson (Nick Tusa), Peggy Jackson Napier (Don); one son - J. Norcom "Buzz" Jackson III; daughter-in-law - Charlotte Walker Jackson; his beloved grandchildren - Lizzie Napier, Charlie Napier, Maddy Bourque, Reiss Jackson and honorary granddaughters - Morgan and Ashton Ford. He is also survived by his brother-in-law - James J. Reiss, and his many beloved nieces and nephews from the Parkerson, Sypesteyn, Reiss and Plauche families. Family and friends are invited to join together and raise a glass in celebration of Norcom's life in the Camellia Ballroom of The Southern Hotel 428 E. Boston St., Covington, LA 70433 on Sunday, January 8th from 3 - 5 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Covington Food Bank, 840 N. Columbia St., Covington, LA 70433 or to the preferred.
