James Leonard Hollis, Sr.James "Jim" Leonard Hollis, Sr., age 83, died peacefully on Wednesday, January 4, 2017 at his home with family present. James was a lifelong resident of Tallahassee, Florida and graduated from Leon High School in 1951. He was the shortstop and alternate captain for the 1951 State AA Baseball Champions and the 1951 Northeast Conference Champions. He was offered an FSU baseball scholarship and an opportunity to play minor league professional baseball. James graduated from FSU with degrees in Geology and Mathematics.Immediately after high school graduation, James was employed with the State of Florida Comptroller's Office achieving the position of Data Center Director. James retired from the State Department of Banking and Finance in 1986 with 35 years of service.James was born on March 1, 1933 to his parents, Johnie L. (Hollis) Rhodes and James "Buster" Pierce Hollis in Tallahassee, Florida. James was preceded in death by his mother Johnie Rhodes, stepfather Barney Rhodes, Jr., and father James P. Hollis. James is survived by his wife Katina "Tina" M. (Georgiou-John) Hollis; three children: James L. "Jimmy" Hollis, Jr., Gina R. Hollis, Dr. Brenda L. Hollis; and three grandchildren: Nicole L. Hollis, Adrian J. Kennedy, James T. Hollis.James and his wife Tina, a native of Elfers, Florida, met while both attending FSU and have been married since 1956. A family man, James, his wife, children and grandchildren made annual trips to catch lobster in the Florida Keys for over 30 years. Along with an infinite number of projects, James personally built a beach house at Alligator Point, Florida, which he and Tina proudly enjoyed most weekends and summers with their children since 1964. Whether relaxing in the sun or chest deep in the water, pulling a seine net, or reeling in a large grouper from his boat, James enjoyed all that the beach had to offer; especially sitting in front of the window, watching the tide, listening to the waves, and breathing in the ocean air. He will truly be missed by his family who saw him every day.Visitation will be Monday, 4-6 pm, at Culley's on Riggins Road. Funeral services will take place on Tuesday, 11:30 am, at Culley's on Timberlane Road with Interment to follow at gravesite. Memorial contributions may be mailed to Katina Hollis, 1910 Alban Ave., Tallahassee, FL 32301, to help with necessary home restorations that James had planned to do himself at the end of hurricane season.
