James "Jim" H Shannon San Angelo James Hershel Shannon, age 88, passed away on Nov. 26, 2016, Jim was born on July 15, 1928 in Oakdale, TN, to Charlie and Mamie (Burrett) Shannon. He Grew up in Harriman, Tennessee, later graduating as Salutatorian from South Harriman High School, TN, and immediately joined the Army Air Core which of course became today's Air Force. He married his high school sweetheart, Ruby Jean Hatfield ("Red") on his birthday, July 15, 1948.During his 30 year career in the Air Force he was stationed in: NY, CO, GA, HI CA, TN, NM (where he served in DASA, Defense Atomic Support Agency, which President John F. Kennedy came in person to review); Okinawa, Goodfellow AFB, San Angelo, TX; Wiesbaden, Germany, Omaha, NE where he retired as a Chief Master Sergeant. Among many other awards and citations during his years of military service, he earned the Air Force Commendation Medal. Upon retirement he received the Meritorious Service Medal for distinguished service for his long career.In 1977 Jim and Ruby returned to San Angelo. He then went on to earn a BA degree in Business Management from Angelo State University in 1980. He was involved with the Adult Literacy Council, teaching the LaBach method of reading to adults. Jim's first love after "Red" was archery. He was a lifetime member of the National Field Archery Association, and was the Membership Chairman of the Concho Valley Archery Association. He won innumerable awards and trophies in his younger days and even shot once with Fred Bear and was on an antelope hunt with Ben Pearson. He was known as Mr. Archery with his deep knowledge of the sport; for his skill and lost art of fletching arrows and making bow strings. He loved teaching people how to shoot and sharing his wealth of archery experience with others. He enjoyed his involvement with the 4-H Club during their archery endeavors. He helped with the "Sneeze and Wheeze" asthma program at summer camp with Shannon Hospital teaching kids how to shoot. He enjoyed fishing, flint knapping, watching football, and collecting knives. Jim was a member of Grace Temple Baptist church where he was ordained a Deacon in 1987 and served faithfully until stepping down due to poor health. He was the facilitator of a home based Bible Study every week for several years. He taught RA boys and helped establish a mission church Koza Baptist Church while on Okinawa.He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Marjorie Clemmer; brother Charles Shannon, half brother George Goddard, an Aunt who helped raise him, Nettie Henley, Aunts Ida Bigham, Hattie Tucker and by his son-in-law Bobby Carter. He is survived by this wife Ruby of 68 years; one daughter, Yvonne Carter, two grandchildren, Christy Jones (Doug) of San Angelo, Scott Carter (Jessica) of Lubbock; and six great grandchildren, Emily, Brett, Fletcher and Gavin Jones of San Angelo, Aubrey and Summer Carter of Lubbock; his cousin Bob (Sue) Henley of Kingston, TN and many friends. Special thanks to Dr. Gary Nussey, Edna, Dawn, and the office staff; Dr. Anthony DeMory and St. John's Dialysis Center personnel for their excellent care; to Shannon Home Health and Hospice of San Angelo. We would also like to thank faithful visitors Ken VanDeman, Bruce Grubbs and other archery buddies as well as members and friends of Grace Temple Baptist Church. Pallbearers will be Doug Fauley, Johnnie Gray, Mark Barta, Bruce Grubbs, Kenny Lunsford, and Sebastian Castillo. Honorary pallbearers are Lonnie Vines, Martin Hernandez, Matt Vines, David Carter, Ken VanDeman, and Calvin Watkins. Jim's influence will be greatly missed as evident by the stream of visitors who came in his last days when word got out he could no longer tolerate dialysis. He was admired and respected by those who knew him. Visitation will be held from Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2016 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Johnson's Funeral Home . Funeral Service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2016 at Johnson's Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. George Cooper and Pastor Christopher Sweet of Grace Temple Baptist Church officiating.
