James H. "Hugh" Cunningham, 80, of West Lafayette passed away on Tuesday, September 2, 2014 at 7:00 a.m. at IU Health Arnett. James was born on November 23, 1933 in Claiborne County, TN to the late Ben C. and Lucy (Lambert) Cunningham. He was a graduate of Harrison High School. Hugh served in the Army. He was first married to Norberta Cantrell, and they later divorced. On November 13, 1981, he married Aretha (Mosby) Pence in Lafayette and she survives. Hugh worked at National Homes in the Shipping Department for 31 years, and then went on to work at in McCutcheon Hall Custodial Services at Purdue University for 10 years. He was a life member of the American Legion 492, a member of the Voiture 40&8, enjoyed working search puzzles, and loved watching basketball and football.Surviving along with his wife are twin sons, Derrell "Lynn" (wife: Lori) Cunningham, and Jerrell "Glen" Cunningham, three step daughters, Darlene (husband: Bill) McNeely, Mona (husband: Isaac) Nightengale, and Melanie (special friend: Mark) Carnahan. Also surviving are two sisters, Audrey Smith of Defuniak Springs, FL and Helen Snodgrass of Tazewell, TN, six grandchildren, Nikki, Kathy, Kelley, Corey, Jessica, Chelsee several step grandchildren and several great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by two children, Patricia "Kay" Schumaker and Glenda Sheppard, and one brother, Lawrence Cunningham.Services will be held on Friday at 2:00 p.m. with visitation one hour prior at Simplicity Funeral Care.
