EWINGJames J. Ewing, age 90, passed away November 3, 2017, at St. Francis Hospital in Greenville, South Carolina. He lost his wife of 57 years, Shirley Schmidt Ewing, in January 2005. Jim was born on July 29, 1927, in Covington KY, to the late Ennis L. and Frances Ann (Meese) Ewing. He is survived by daughter Denise E. Ewing, of Florence, KY, daughter and son-in-law Victoria (Vickie) and Hugh Ware of Hayesville, NC, and daughter and son-in-law Connie and Richard Ottino, of Travelers Rest, SC. He leaves behind grandson Richard James Ottino and his wife Kayla, and their children Cameron, Brooklyn, Zoe, Sky and Malachi; granddaughter Megan Daly and her husband Nathan, and their sons Alexander, Finnegan and Kieran; granddaughter Jessica Ann Snook, and her husband Charlie; step-granddaughter Tracey Ware Fears and her husband Eric, and their two children Cole and Marcella. Jim also leaves behind brother Eugene Ewing and his wife Barbara, brother Thomas "Butch" Ewing, sister Martha Ewing, and brother-in law Michael Schuh, as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Besides his wife, Jim was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters, Mary Elaine Harris, Pauline Ewing Schuh, Patricia Henrietta Deem, and Dorothy Ewing and one brother, Billy Ewing. Jim served in the US Army from 1945-46, and later earned an associate degree from Xavier University. He retired from Cincinnati Electronics in Evendale, OH, after 39 years of service, and after retirement, worked for 12 years as a crew van driver for Comair. Jim and Shirley moved to Florence in 1956, where Jim served on City Council and the Planning Commission for decades. He was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church, and served with the Knights of Columbus and the Lions Club through the years. Jim was a busy "Do-Daddy" for the Girl Scouts when Shirley served as a GS Leader, and his daughters were active scouts. He enjoyed all types of travel, from Sunday drives to air trips. He visited all 50 states plus Ireland and New Zealand. Jim loved people, singing and music, game shows, the Cincinnati Reds, the Kentucky Wildcats, and the Xavier Musketeers. Jim moved to Travelers Rest SC in 2008, to be lovingly cared for by Connie and Richard, and their children. There, he was active at the YMCA and Senior Action. Visitation will be Friday, November 10, from 5-8 pm at Stith Funeral Home 7500 U.S. Hwy 42 Florence, KY 41042. Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at St. Paul Catholic Church 7301 Dixie Hwy Florence, KY 41042 on Saturday, November 11, at 10 am, followed by burial at Florence Cemetery.
