VanMeter, Jack,Jack VanMeter, age 90, of Louisville, KY, formerly of Grayson County, passed away Sunday (November 20, 2016) at Diversicare of Seneca Place, in Louisville KY.He was born on April 11, 1926 to Annie Mae (Kinkade) and Guy VanMeter, the eighth out of eleven children, in Meredith, Kentucky in Grayson County. He was raised and worked on his father's farm until graduating from Clarkson High School in June 1944. He enlisted into the army on August 9, 1944, where he served 18 months through the Battle of the Bulge and the surrender of Germany and Japan. He was discharged from the Army on July 1st, 1946 as a member of company E, 8th Infantry Regiment, 4th Division with the rank of staff sergeant. He attended the University of Louisville from September of 1948 through November 1952, where he graduated with a degree in Commerce, having majored in Accounting. While in college, he worked several part-time jobs (Fetter Printing, The Army Store) and full time at Kroger Bakery. After graduation he worked full time at Hanna-Graham Dodge/Plymouth until becoming the Store Manager at Radcliff Department Store from April of 1954 to January of 1970, when he became the Director of Operations for the Radcliff Company until his retirement in December of 1991.He learned to hunt and fish as a boy and continued to do so until his death. He was a Kentucky Colonel, a member of the Masonic Lodge from 1953, a lifetime member of the VFW and the American Legion. He also loved sports: particularly football, basketball and baseball.He is survived by his sons, James Oliver VanMeter of Taylorsville, KY, David Wayne VanMeter of Louisville, KY, John Franklin VanMeter also of Louisville; a daughter, Barbara Lewis (Jeff) of California; and a granddaughter, Jacqueline Williams also of California.Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by seven brothers, Campbell, Pete, Oliver, Guy Jr, Dock, Marcus and Norman; and three sisters, Zora, Faye and Aileen.Funeral services will be at 12:00 p.m. noon (CST) Saturday, (November 26, 2015) at the Dermitt Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Providence Cemetery.Visitation will be at the Dermitt Funeral Home from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. (CST) on Friday and from 9:00 a.m. Saturday until time of services.In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to any Veteran's Hospital or Veteran's Nursing Home in Kentucky.Online condolences can be made in the guestbook on our website at www.dermittfuneralhome.com
