Of Alexandria, VA died November 7, 2016 at INOVA Alexandria Hospital of sepsis caused by necrotizing fasciitis. He was born on July 6, 1937 in Brooklyn, NY to the late Barney and Lee Fein.
Dr. Fein was a program director in the atmospheric sciences area at the National Science Foundation for over 30 years. He played a key leadership role in garnering national and international support for several complex and ultimately very successful satellite observing technology development projects. He brought diplomatic skill and scientific insight to organizing support for a number of major international field experiments designed to understand the fundamental processes of the climate system. His encouragement and support were critical to the development of state-of-the-art community climate models.
Jay was the beloved husband of Sara Fein; loving and devoted father of Benjamin (Genevieve) Fein and Elizabeth (Jeffrey) Karberg.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 19 at 9:30 a.m. at Immanuel Church-on-the-Hill, Zabriskie Chapel, 3606 Seminary Road, Alexandria, VA. Because Jay was interested in helping young scientists throughout his career, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to the Jay Fein Scholarship Fund may be sent to: American Meteorological Society, Attn: Jay Fein Scholarship Fund, 45 Beacon Street, Boston, MA 02108.
