Henry Moore Carter, Jr. North Litchfield, SC Henry Moore Carter, Jr. of North Litchfield, SC passed away November 15, 2016. A native of Portsmouth, VA, he was born on March 10, 1932 to Henry and Debbie Carter. He received a BA degree from Randolph-Macon College. During his senior year he served as student director of the Glee Club, a member of the Judicial Council and presidents of ODK, national leadership fraternity, SPE and the Inter-fraternity council. He earned a MA in English from Vanderbilt University. On August 21, 1954 he married his high school sweetheart, Rhea Greene. He taught senior English and was Headmaster at Bollingbrook School in Petersburg, Virginia before returning to Randolph Macon College. He worked there for eleven years ending as Vice-President for Development. He was President of the Winston-Salem Foundation from 1977-1997. He served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Southeastern Council of Foundations, as Chairman of the Community Foundation division of the national Council on Foundations, and in North Carolina as Chair of the Board of the North Carolina Center for Nonprofits. In Winston-Salem he led the growth of the foundation from $25 million to $150 million. He served in a number of leadership posts including a term as Chairman of the Forsyth County Common Vision Council and as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Old Salem. He was treasurer of the Crosby Celebrity Golf Tournament and supervised the distribution of proceeds to various charities. As an outgrowth of the tournament, he led in the establishment of the Crosby Scholars program. He also was a founding member and chairman of the Forsyth County Crime Stoppers program. After retirement, he was a foundation consultant. He was listed in Who's Who in America for decades. He loved music, books and new experiences, especially foreign and domestic travel, with his wife of 62 years and expert navigator. She survives him along with a beloved daughter Clair Carter Bell and her husband Thomas G. Bell of Staunton, VA and one fine grandson, Thomas G.Bell III. A memorial service will be held at 3:00PM Friday, November 18, 2016 at Belin Memorial United Methodist Church Murrells Inlet, SC.
