A life well lived

Henry Albert "Sonny" Voigt of Boerne, Texas passed away Friday September 4th at the age of 85, after a long courageous battle with cancer. Sonny was born to Henry and Mabel Voigt on July 18, 1935 in San Antonio, Texas.

Sonny learned what hard work was at an early age. He started herding cattle across San Antonio when he was 7.  As the oldest son, he quit school at an early age to help out on the family dairy. Sonny loved to rodeo and was a bareback rider and a calf roper.  He worked as a heavy equipment operator for many years helping build some of San Antonio's largest and most iconic projects.  Sonny had a tremendous sense of humor and loved playing jokes and telling them. He loved all kids, animals, the outdoors, and fishing.  He especially loved his dog "Buddy".  Anyone who fished with him has a hilarious Sonny fishing story. Sonny was known as "Pa" to his grandkids, great grandkids, and the neighborhood kids. You would see him having races with them, whether it was a foot race or a bicycle race, he was always ready to beat whoever challenged him all the while smoking a cigarette. He was a kid at heart.  If his grandsons Taylor and Blake and neighbor kids were pulling some sort of shenanigans, most likely Sonny either helped participate, or planned it.  Some called Sonny "MacGyver" because he could fix anything with nothing more than bailing wire, a rubber band, a paperclip, and electrical tape.

He was a wonderful and loving son, husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, and uncle.  He was a friend to many and he will be missed deeply.

Sonny is survived by his wife Tommie Laura Voigt, and two daughters; Laura Michele (Shelly) and husband Scott Coy, and Emily Darcell (Darci) and husband Erik Buttlar, his six grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, four brothers, and four sisters.

He is preceded in death by his parents Henry and Mable Voigt, a son Douglas Wade Voigt, a brother Jack Patrick "Pat" Voigt and two sisters, Joyce West, and Janet "Shorty" Tuttle.

The family would like to thank Alamo Hospice and his nurses Christy and Norma for the loving and wonderful care they gave him and Visiting Angels.
