Helen A. Ballantyne 1922 - 2016Helen A. Ballantyne, 94, of Springfield, died at 6:51 a.m. on November 3, 2016 at Hickory Glen.Helen was born on January 30, 1922 in Carbondale, the daughter of Oren and Ruth Crawshaw Bell. She met and fell in love with Kelso Joseph Ballantyne while living in Chicago, IL. They were married on March 20, 1943 in Memphis, Tennessee and shared 61 wonderful years together. He preceded her in death in 2004.Helen was also preceded in death by her parents, and her grandson, Adam Stetson.Helen attended Southern Illinois University Carbondale. Kelso Joseph and Helen built and owned the Surf Club of Springfield. She was a member of the Christian Science Church. Helen was a wonderful seamstress. She also enjoyed playing tennis and traveling with her husband. Helen was strong willed and spirited: she had her pilot's license before she had her driver's license. She is survived by her son, Kelso R. (Bonnie) Ballantyne of Longmont, CO; former daughter-in-law, Nancy (Charles) Woodward of Springfield; grandchildren, Elizabeth (Jim) Livingston, Kelso Brent (Sadie) Ballantyne, Deborah (Kevin) Trout, and Ryan (Stacey) Woodward; and ten great-grandchildren.
