Harvey CoffmanDecember 23, 1931 - September 25, 2015Harvey Glen Coffman, 83, of Blackfoot, Idaho passed away on September 25, 2015, surrounded by loved ones. Harvey was born on the family farm in Rupert on December 23, 1931, the seventh of eight children to Arthur and Hazel Coffman. He attended school in Rupert where he ran track, played basketball, and started as the high school football quarterback. He married the love of his life, Carole Harris on June 19, 1953 in Pocatello. In their early years, Carole and Harvey lived in Virginia during the Korean War where Harvey served in the Army. Later their marriage was solemnized in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple. They celebrated 57 years of marriage before Carole passed away in 2010. Harvey worked for the Union Pacific Railroad and later as a carpenter and electrician, eventually owing Intermountain Petroleum where he installed gas pumps and underground tanks for many gas and oil companies throughout Idaho. In his later years of employment, he worked at Bannock Memorial Hospital in Pocatello as an electrician.Harvey loved hunting and fishing with his family and friends. His favorite place to fish was Mackay and the Big Lost River. His grandchildren remember eating at Pickles in Arco after a good day of fishing.In 1973, Harvey and Carol moved to Blackfoot, purchasing 53 acres in the Riverton area for the beautiful white Charolais cattle he had begun breeding. They lovingly named their property Golden Valley Charolais. Over 45 years Harvey became known as an outstanding breeder of bulls and traveled extensively to fairs and cattle show competitions throughout the Northwest. Among the many honors and ribbons he received, the one he treasured most was Best Championship Bull of All Breeds at the Eastern Idaho State Fair. Besides being very active in the Idaho Cattle Association, he served as the Northwest Charolais Association President as well as on their board. One of his greatest pleasures was sharing his love of Charolais with his posterity and serving as a mentor to many young cattlemen starting their own herds. In 1999, he was one of four Northwest cattle breeders chosen to represent the Idaho Department of Agriculture in a livestock exposition in Durango City, Mexico. There he assisted ranchers, whose livestock herds had been decimated by a long drought, with breeding techniques. Harvey was a convert to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where he served in a bishopric as a counselor, in the Young Men's program and also in the Sunday School, most recently serving as an assistant to the 12-year-old class in the Riverton Ward. He loved working with young people. One of his favorite callings was as a church service worker at the LDS Employment Service. Harvey was a dedicated and loving husband, father and grandfather. He and Carole had four children: Valerie, who passed away at birth, Doug (Rose) of Blackfoot; Sheri (Ted) Sharp of Nampa; and Connie (Kurt) Thompson of Blackfoot and 11 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Harvey is survived by a brother, Art (Roberta) Coffman and a sister Louise Larson. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Carole, his brothers Loren and Raymond and sisters, Rosa Wheeler, Dorothy Burton, and Juanita Hammond.Funeral Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, October 2, 2015 at the Blackfoot LDS South Stake Center, 900 Riverton Road. The family will receive friends from 11:00 to 12:30 p.m. prior to the service. Burial will be in the Groveland Cemetery. Condolences may be sent to [email protected].
