BRIGHTON — Hargis E. "Gene" Lovelace, 85, of Brighton died Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2014, at Life Care Center of LaGrange. He moved to the area in 1963 from Fairborn, Ohio. Mr. Lovelace had worked as a coal miner and in foundries. He retired from the Indiana Toll Road and had owned and operated Lovelace Standard Gas Station in Howe for many years. He was a member of the Howe Lions Club and a former member of the Howe Volunteer Fire Department. Mr. Lovelace was born on August 6, 1929 in Perry County, Kentucky, to William and Stella (Hager) Lovelace. On June 8, 1948, in Hazard, Kentucky, he married Mary E. Breeding. She survives in Brighton. Also surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Stella Jeanette and Michael Lagowski of Scotts, Michigan; two sons and daughters-in-law, Hargis E. "Gene" Jr. and Connie Lovelace of Howe and Vaughn and Susie Lovelace of Howe; seven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; a sister, Anita Conway of West Union, Ohio; a brother and sister-in-law, Jay and Helen Lovelace of Xenia, Ohio; two sisters-in-law and two brothers-in-law, Martha June Combs, Ruby Dean and Merlin Cornett, and Willard Breeding (Elaine Chaney); and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Glenn Lovelace; two sisters, Stella Jo Rice and Maxine Fields; and two brothers, William Lovelace Jr. and Mack Lovelace. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Frurip-May Funeral Home, 309 W. Michigan St., LaGrange. The Rev. Forrest Van Gundy will officiate. Burial will follow in Brighton Cemetery in rural Howe Visitation will be from 2-6 p.m. Sunday and 9-11 a.m. Monday prior to the service at the funeral home.
