Gwendolyn "Gwen" Elynor Hermann1926 ~ 2015Gwendolyn "Gwen" Elynor Hermann peacefully passed away in her home, in Boise, on October 26, 2015. Gwen was 89 years of age and despite the ravages of dementia her wish to remain at home gave her joy through the last of her days. Gwen was born on June 20, 1926 in Oakland, California to Alma and Jean Matty. Like so many in her generation she lived through a turbulent time of our county's history and taught the next generation the virtue of perseverance. Gwen was always in the know and had an insatiable appetite for reading. To her delight shortly after graduating high school in 1944, she landed a job as a cub
reporter at the Oakland Tribune. To make ends meet as a reporter, she also tried her hand at advertising for the paper. One of Gwen's customers, Otto and Alvia owners of the Hermann Furniture Company arranged a blind date for her with their son, Oscar. That blind date led Gwen to the love of her life and a whirlwind romance that lasted fifty years.Soon after the couple married, Gwen found herself an expecting mother. Her first child was a son Jeff and the next child was a daughter Carole. Gwen found motherhood in the military trying but determined to be a good mother and military wife, took all matters in stride. A child at heart, Gwen preferred to see the comedy in all things, and her unending sense of humor is one of the many gifts she imparts to us. The highlight of the military life was during Oscar's last tour of duty based in Spain. While stationed in Europe, Gwen traveled to Russia, Italy and Portugal. Of the all the places Gwen visited, she fell in love most with the people, the art and the landscape of Spain. Her love for Spain was so intense she brought artisan furniture back to the states and designed her retirement home in the Moorish style. Without a doubt Spain conjured her soul. Her favorite saying was Ole! This expression captured the essence of her spirit. In the last decade Gwen lived at home and was cared for by many loving individuals. Gwen is eternally grateful for the sincere kindness given to her. She gives special thanks to those who tended her and provided professional service: Dr. Germano, Bill her accountant and Bill her attorney, Jody, Aislinn, Victoria, Kim, Tona, Susan, Rita, Angie, Joanne, Bebe, Cathleen, Theresa, Petra, Jackie, Iva, John, Rick, Douglas, Father Dave, Eliah, Brenda & Drew, Caroline, Walt and Shawn, Rudolph and Angela. She is thankful for the exceptional attentiveness and support given by Legacy Hospice over the last two years which made her concluding journey peaceful as it should be. Extra thanks to social worker, Dorothy, Nurses: Brittany, Heather, Kiera, Greg, Harold, Chris, Sharon, Sue and CNA's: Lisa, Tanya, Sharon, Lauren and Terra.Gwen is preceded in death by her beloved daughter, Carol Jeannette and her devoted husband, Oscar. She is survived by a son, Charles Jeffery Hermann; one grandson, Jarred Hermann; two granddaughters, Heather Petrovich, and Printha Shaaya; and four great-grandchildren. Gwen was an ardent animal lover and salutes adios to her companion cat Amara. Gwen's last wishes were to be cremated. A memorial will be held on a future date at the inurnment of her ashes. Through our loss your memory shines.
