Gordon Kenneth JohnsonABILENE, TXGordon Kenneth Johnson, 83, passed away Tuesday, January 3, 2017, in Abilene, Texas.The son of the late Margaret (O'Leary) and Robert Johnson, he was born on December 30, 1933 in Dallas, Texas. He graduated from North Dallas High School (Bulldogs) and received his Bachelor of Business Administration from Southern Methodist University. He served in the National Guard as a tank commander. Gordon had worked for General Dynamics, Texas Instruments, Collins Radio, and in his part-time engraving business, Johnson Engraving Service.Gordon married Dorothy Virginia Bourland on December 29, 1956 in Highland Park. During the rearing of his family, he coached his kids in basketball, softball and football. He loved playing basketball, racquetball, tetherball, and other sports with his family. He was a member of Wylie Baptist Church in Abilene. In his later life, Gordon was a master gardener of which he was very proud. He was recognized for his yard as "Yard of the Month", having created a hedge in the shape of the State of Texas. He was also a creative woodworker and built many pieces of furniture which are still in the family. Gordon also restored a 1958 Corvette which he drove in many parades and taking his kids to school. Gordon is survived by his wife, Dorothy Virginia Johnson of Abilene; son, Steve Johnson and wife Donna of Dunedin, New Zealand; daughters, Marianne Rogers and husband Randy of Plano, Texas and Marilou Johnson of Abilene; five grandchildren, Andrew Charles Rogers, Amy Lynn Rogers, Rachel Elaine Vaughn and husband Guilherme, Amanda Kathryn Johnson, and Eric William Johnson. Visitation will be 3:00PM until 4:00PM Sunday, January 8, 2017 at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road, Abilene. Funeral services will be held at 11:00AM Monday, January 9, 2017 in The Hamil Family Funeral Home chapel with Rick Grant officiating.
