George S. Taylor Jr.
CHARLOTTE — George Sampson Taylor Jr., of Charlotte, N.C., passed away Jan. 16, 2017, at Levine & Dickson Hospice House - Huntersville.
He was born on Oct. 25, 1924, in Catawba County. He was the son of the late George Sampson Taylor Sr. and the late Lottie May Sigmon Taylor. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran. George graduated from Maiden High School, Maiden, N.C., in 1941. He then attended Mitchell Junior College, Statesville, N.C. (1948-1950). He received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics and Social Studies from Appalachian State University (1949-1955). George received his Master of Education Degree in School Administration and additional graduate study from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (1959-1961).
George began his educational career in 1950. He was the mathematics teacher and coach for East Bend High School until 1952. Later, from 1953-1955, he was the mathematics teacher and coach for Anderson High School. George was named the principal of Prospect Hill School in Caswell County from 1955 - 1961. In 1961 he worked as principal for Littlefield High School of Robeson County and also served as district principal of three elementary schools until 1967. From 1967–1969 he was the principal of Greene County Central High School. In 1969, he became the superintendent of Greene County Schools in Snow Hill, N.C., where held the position for 15 years. George became the headmaster of Harrells Christian Academy, Harrells, N.C., in 1985 and remained there until 1987. From 1987–1988, he was the superintendent of Polk County Schools in Columbus, N.C. George served as superintendent of Robeson County Schools from 1990 – 1991.
In addition to his parents, his wife, Ella Ervin Taylor, preceded him in death.
Left to cherish his memory are his daughter, Donna Hayworth, Donna's husband, David, both of Charlotte; and a granddaughter, Taylor Hayworth of Charlotte
A private graveside service will be held in Maiden City Cemetery.
