George Plater Wagner, Jr.Naples, FLGeorge Plater Wagner, Jr. died on November 6, 2016 after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer's disease. He was born on July 20, 1939 in Baltimore, Maryland, the only son of Mary and George Wagner. George is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Patricia, his adoring children, George Wagner III and Allison Page Wagner, and his cherished granddaughter, Anderson French Wagner. George will be remembered by his loving family and friends for his thoughtfulness, kindness, generosity and great wit. His gentle spirit, steadfast integrity and love of life earned him the devotion of his many friends. George was a graduate of Johns Hopkins University, where he majored in Accounting. He was a CPA and spent the first eight years of his career in public accounting. After that, he entered the nursing home business as Treasurer and Chief Financial Officer of PMG, Inc. in Virginia Beach, VA. When Beverly Enterprises acquired PMG in 1982, George was appointed President of its Eastern Division. In his six years as President, George led the growth of the Division from 35 facilities to over 250 facilities. While at Beverly, George also saw the management information system he had designed and implemented at PMG successfully applied to track key performance indicators for Beverly's over 1,200 long-term care facilities. In 1988 George was promoted to Executive Vice President for Nursing Home Operations, based in Pasadena, CA. where he was responsible for the overall operations of Beverly's long-term care facilities nationwide. In 1990 George relocated to Atlanta, GA, where he was instrumental in the opening of a national training center for Beverly Enterprises.In 1992, along with a cadre of associates, George left Beverly Enterprises to form Liberty Health Care, headquartered in Naples, FL, where he served as Chief Executive Officer. At its height, Liberty Health Care operated 37 long-term care facilities. Throughout his career, George applied his leadership skills and management philosophy not just to making the business successful but to developing the lives and careers of many of his associates and employees. George had an ability to recognize innate talent and capability and wasn't afraid to give people a chance to grow and develop.George served the industry unselfishly and with distinction as a national officer of The American Health Care Association and as Chairman of the industry's Payment for Service Committee. George also served on numerous fixed and ad hoc committees of state and local health associations. George enjoyed traveling with family and friends and never missed a round of golf with his good buddies. He also supported many local charities in Naples and was honored to be one of the original founders of the Naples Children & Education Foundation. A family funeral mass will be held on Saturday, November 12, 2016 in Immaculate Conception Church, Towson, MD, followed by interment at Druid Ridge Cemetery, Baltimore, MD.
