NORTH PORT, Fla. Dr. George G. Cornish, 90, of North Port, Florida, died on May 25, 2013.

Dr. Cornish was born on March 6, 1923, the only child of Frank and Naomi Cornish of Carrollton, Ohio. After graduating from Carrollton High School in 1941, he attended Mount Union College, Alliance, Ohio, Baldwin Wallace College, Berea, Ohio, before entering the United States Navy during World War II and serving as a Pharmacist's Mate Third Class in the Naval Reserve. He was honorably discharged in March, 1945 and returned to Ohio completing his education at The Ohio State University where he received a B.A. degree in 1946 and M.D. degree in 1950. He married Thelma Marie Bartel of Cleveland, Ohio in September, 1946. She was his wife of twenty-three years and mother of his two sons, George R. Cornish and David R. Cornish.

Dr. Cornish served his internship and residency at St. Luke's Hospital, Cleveland, Ohio, before entering the United States Air Force, in 1954 as a Captain. He served for two years at MacDill Air Force Base, Tampa, Florida, where he became chief of obstetrics and gynecology. In August, 1956 he received an honorable discharge from the Air Force and again returned to Ohio where he joined the staff of the Yellow Springs Clinic, Yellow Springs, Ohio. For several years he had privileges at Springfield City Hospital and Mercy Hospital, both in Springfield, Ohio and Greene Memorial Hospital, Xenia, Ohio. After leaving the Yellow Springs Clinic in 1967 he joined the staff of Medical Associates Clinic, Xenia, Ohio and continued to practice at Greene Memorial Hospital, which later named the delivery room in his honor. Additionally he was on the faculty of the medical school of Wright State University, Fairborn, Ohio. In November, 1972 he married Iris Shinkle. They lived in Xenia, surviving the 1974 Xenia tornado, until his retirement in September, 1985, after which they moved to North Port, Florida.

Dr. Cornish and his wife Iris were longtime members of Old Town Methodist Church, Old Town, Ohio and Trinity United Methodist Church, North Port, Florida.

Dr. Cornish was a proud member of The Ohio State University Alumni Association and Phi Kappa Tau Fraternity.

Dr. Cornish was an avid golfer. He was a member of the MacDill Air Force Base Golf Club, Tampa, Florida, a founding member of Greene Country Club, Fairborn, Ohio and member of North Port Country Club (Sabal Trace), North Port, Florida for over thirty years.

Dr. Cornish is survived by Iris Cornish, his devoted and loving wife of more than forty years, his sons, George R. Cornish of Venice, Florida and David R. Cornish and his wife, Diane M. Cornish of Venice, Florida, granddaughter, Lindsay J. Cornish of Gainesville, Florida, stepdaughter, Iris Bone and her husband Dennis Bone of Jamestown, Ohio, stepgrandson, Shawn Bone and his wife Kim Bone of Jamestown, Ohio and children, Tyler, Brandon and Logan, stepson Ronald Shinkle and his wife Connie Shinkle of San Diego, California, and stepgranddaughter, Leslie Shinkle of Santa Barbara, California.

As a true gentleman, Dr. Cornish gave generously of his time, talent and treasure to his churches, numerous individuals and charitable organizations. The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Salvation Army or the American Red Cross for victims of the recent Oklahoma tornadoes.

Services will be private and burial will be at the Sarasota National Cemetery, Sarasota, Florida. Farley Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
