Galer Winthrop Beed, 73, of Ellensburg, passed away Wednesday, March 16, 2011, after a long illness, at Royal Vista Care Center in Ellensburg. His family had been with him for many hours during the previous days and nights and also had been attended and cared for 24 hours a day by members of the Royal Vista caring staff. Annabel Villa and Stevie Jarman were with him at the time of his death. Galer Winthrop Beed, Jr., known to friends and family as "Bo," was born on June 13, 1937, in Chicago, Illinois to Galer W. and Dorothy (Herd) Beed. The Beed family lived in Chicago, for a brief time in Beaumont, Texas, and then in Warrenville, and Rochelle, Illinois. Mr. Beed graduated from Rochelle Township High School, Rochelle, Illinois, with the Class of 1956. After some undergraduate courses at Northern Illinois University, DeKalb, Illinois, and at the University of Idaho in Moscow, he received his bachelor's degree from Oregon State University in 1963. After earning his master's degree at San Jose State in California in 1965 and his doctorate from the University of Arkansas in 1969, he taught at East Tennessee State College in Johnson City, Tennessee, until 1973, when he came to teach at Central Washington University in Ellensburg. Dr. Beed's career at CWU spanned 28 years. He was hired as chairman of the Industrial and Engineering Technology Department in 1973 and was instrumental in developing a number of new programs that are now nationally accredited. He also oversaw a growth in student enrollment in the IET Department as a result of the new program offerings. This growth eventually resulted in the need for a new building. He retired in 2001 as Professor Emeritus of Industrial and Engineering Technology. Bo's tenure at Central included the development of the largest teaching foundry in the Pacific Northwest and a professional connection with most of the industrial and art foundries in the area. He was active in supporting the Foundry Education Foundation and was a member of the Washington chapter of the American Foundry Society, in which he held several offices. He was active in starting the annual Pattern Swap, which attracted metalcasters from near and far to the foundry at CWU. In 2008 their poster announced the "35th year with Bo Beed." Bo is lovingly survived by his wife Lee of Ellensburg; two sons, Warren O. (Debbie) Beed of LaCenter, WA, and Richard M.(Tanya) Beed of Seattle and their mother, Barbara Beed of Ellensburg; stepdaughter Linlee Nelson of Missoula, Mt.; grandchildren Joshua, Jami, Ashlie, and Nate Beed, Jake Robbins, and Kailee and Kate Nelson. He is also survived by his brothers Charles (Mary) Beed, of Roscoe, Illinois and John (Susie) Beed, of Huntington Beach, CA, and James (Linda) Beed, of Coeur d'Alene, Id. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister Geraldine Batsch.
